THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 THE CHIEF Chestnut colt, by Pennant Transit; -owned by M. Howard. Trained by E. H. Sande. By NORMS HOYDEN i The Chief began his career as the most promising juvenile in the stable of C. V. Whitney, and he lived up to his reputation in scoring handily in the National Stallion Stakes, but the son of Pennant and Transit, by Chicle, was unable to carry on thereafter, and Dauber fetched twice as much money in the Whitney dispersal after the Pimlico Futurity in November. His purchaser was Maxwell Howard, which makes him a stablemate of Stagehand, but The Chief was not asked for a winter campaign, although he is now in preparation for the Kentucky Derby along with the sensational son of Sickle. He may not prove near as good as Stagehand but The Chief has an excellent right to develop into a three- ThpShlpf hJfriS IaJB Srt over the straiSht course at Belmont Park Park The Chief had difficulty h into settling his stride, but Dauber came through for him to win by two lengths over his running mate. Next time out The Chief required no assistance and ran four and a half furlongs in :525 to defeat Bourbon Kins by half a length. Bucking was third. He followed up his graduation effort by taking the National Stallion in the time of :58 for the straight five furlongs, winning by a length and one-half over Catalysis as Transmitter was third and Great Union fourth Trainer Thomas J. Healey then put The Chief away until the United States Hotel 7u es Satosa, but the colt did not negotiate the muddy going very well and ran fifth although beaten only about three lengths by Chaps. He failed to threaten in the Saratoga Special, but did better in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes to take third honors back of Fighting Fox and Mountain Ridge. Returning to Belmont Park, The Chief weakened in the Champagne Stakes to run fourth back of Menow, Bull Lea and Fighting Fox, but in the Futurity he could not maintain a. position in the front group and finished seventh, beaten eleven lengths by Menow. An improved performance brought him third honors in the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica, in which he closed stoutly in the stretch to lose by a length and a half to Bourbon King, with Mountain Ridge second. 4Th.e lhiffi.s final two outings took place at Pimlico in the Walden Handicap and Futurity, but he was unable to figure prominently in the stretch, to finish seventh and fifth, respectively Nedayr being the winner of both races. Then came his sale at auction to Colonel Howard, whose trainer is Earl Sande. After a winters vacation The Chief may prove a different sort of a colt and thTA01,? a raJ?kmg member of the threa-year-old division. After his failure In the United States q Hotel Stakes, he sidestepped several engagements for which he had been pointed due to the unsatisfactory condition of the track, and this may have had some influence on his ability when he was put to the question. As far as is known, The Chief is thoroughly sound and he is well equipped physically to do what he can do. His breeding is of the best as his sire, Pennant, got many good ones, both stayers and otherwise, while The Chief is from Transit, by Chicle, and she was a half-sister to Transmute, a good race horse and sire. Numerous other good performers have come out of this family.
