For the Statistically Inclined LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 1.— In the 67 previous runnings of the Kentucky Derby, a total of 678 thoroughbreds have taken part in it. The largest number in any one renewal was 22, and the smallest, three. The average number of starters for the 67 runnings is slightly more than 10. The total number of nominations for the 67-year period between 1875 and 1941, is 6,948, for a yearly average of 104. The biggest entry list was the 196 who were made eligible in 1928 and the smallest, 32, in 1913.
