Bashford Manor Stakes Annexed by Navy Cross Son of Infinite Easily Defeats Take Away in Front-Running Race LOUISVILLE, Ky. May 1.— Navy Cross, owned by E. A. Carney and Kirby Ramsey of Louisville, showed his heels to 10 other juvenile colts and geldings in the 41st running of the fashionable Bashford Manor Stakes, before a tremendous Derby eve crowd at Churchill Downs this afternoon. Jockey Jack Richard sent the son of Infinite to the front at the beginning, and the gelding maintained a comfortable advantage all the way, winning by two lengths. Susan E. Kellogg s Take Away was second, with third honors going to John Marschs Hoosier. The favorite, Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Grimes Captain Zac, finished out of the picture. Navy Cross, making only the second start of his career, earned ,045 through his smart performance. He handled himself well, and the partners Carney and Ramsey have good reason to believe they own a colt of real promise. He ran the five furlongs of todays engagement in :59%, three-fifths of a second off the track record and was not even seriously threatened at any stage of the trip. Take Away made up many lengths to account for his share of the prize and, in winning the place, beat the weakening Hoosier, winner here a few days ago, by two and a half lengths. Total Victory was fourth. Captain Zac broke well here, but he was taken back until he had little chance to be a serious threat.
