Fourth Oldest Race Track LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 1.— Only three other race tracks now operating in the United States are older than Churchill Downs, which will be the scene of the sixty-eighth running of the Kentucky Derby tomorrow. Saratoga was constructed in 1873 and the inaugural meeting there got under way on August 9, 1864. Pimlico, located in Baltimore, Md., held its first season in 1870 and the sport opened that year on October 25. The New Orleans Fair Grounds is the third course, still in use and which antedates the historic Derby oval. The Crescent City plant opened its gates for racing April 12, 1873.
