Gondalina Repeats At Suffolk Downs Watkins Mare Displays Her Versatility as Router After Winning Sprint Last Out BOSTON, Mass., June 21.— Gondalina, five-year-old daughter of Challenger II. and Flag Trick, racing for G. R. Watkins, turned in a smart route performance to account for the Town Lyne Purse, an allowance offering for performers in grade "C" and top attraction on today s card at Suffolk Downs. Charles Rufis Dense Patch, a winner in four of her last five, finished in second place, while Arthur Murray earned the show award for Mrs. Weston W. Adams. Shortening finished fourth and Challomine last in the small field. One of the best Monday crowds of the meeting was on hand, 10,178 journeying to the course. Jockey Herb Claggett was astride the Watkins mare and it was his second winning ride of the afternoon, having previously been astride Valdina Valona in the third race. The feature carried a purse of ,875. Gondalina was first to show in front from the start, while Dense Path was a bit tardy in getting under way, coming out of the stall gates last. Going to the first turn Coucci hustled Arthur Murray along and showed the way. Challomine was right there, while apprentice Pena, after a slow beginning, rushed the Rufi filly up on the inside and into close quarters. Winner Under Snug Reserve Coucci continued to send Arthur Murray along about his business and into the back stretch was racing well clear. Gondalina was under snug reserve on the outside, while Dense Path, still wanting for racing room, was on the inside. Pena made several bids with Dense Path before getting through. Arthur Murray was still in command. Midway down the back stretch Dense Path found racing room and moved up quickly to chase after the leader. The Watkins mare was still within striking distance of the pace and racing under snug reserve. Nearing the stretch turn Dense Path moved up and headed the Adams four-year-old. Gondalina was starting to give improved speed and was right there. The Watkins mare made her bid for command after straightening out in the stretch, wore down Dense Path with only a furlong to be run, coming out to enjoy an advantage of three parts of a length at the end. Dense Path was easily the better of the others, showing daylight over Arthur Murray. Challomine, after her brief display of speed, dropped back and played little part in the running. Valdina Valona, owned by J. Truett, Jr., graduated from the non-winner ranks over the big batch of ,500 maiden juveniles that contested the five furlongs of the third race. Grace Tamm drove into second place. Cling, after forcing the pace of Patch Party during the opening three furlongs, landed third. A pair of juveniles that first came to New England in the string trained by J. Serio, Jr., landed first and second, respectively, in the five furlongs of the fourth race. Bud West, now racing for Sam Garfield, was returned winner, with E. Reuters Renraw closing with a belated rush to take the place. Cab Sir was third in the company of eight ,500 platers. Bud West raced in command practically throughout, paid 6.00 and was timed in 1:01.
