Thirty-Five Massachusetts Nominees Stars of Handicap Division Are Named Weights for Suffolk Downs 0,000 Feature of July 5 Will Be Released Saturday BOSTON, Mass., June 21.— The Eastern Racing Association today announced the list of nominees for the 1943 renewal of the 0,000 Massachusetts Handicap, with 35 of the top thoroughbreds in .training named for the nine-furlong event. The ninth running of the stake, inaugurated back in 1935, will be held at Suffolk Downs on July 5, several weeks earlier than previous renewals. The nominating line-up is naturally headed by the Calumet Farms Whirl-away, who used last years running as a final stepping stone to all time money-winning honors. In that renewal Whirlaway set a new course record of 1:48*5 as he came to the end a length and a half in front. The longtailed colt will need to be at his very best if decision is made to again send him after New Englands richest stake. Among his rivals can be found such turf warriors as Abbe Pierre, the hero of the current meeting. Vagrancy, Don Bingo, Devil Diver, Shut Out, Attention, Mioland, Market Wise, Valdina Orphan, Rounders, Our Boots, Boysy and other top-notchers of the handicap colony. It is one of the strongest fields ever nominated for the race, proving not only the popularity of the fixture, but its increasing importance to the turf as well. Seabiscuit Earned 1,780 The Massachusetts has a high honor to uphold — that of having never been won by other than a top-ranking horse and a look through the 1943 roster of eligibles indicates the approaching running will prove no exception. Starting back in 1935 for a 5,000 value. Top Row made turf history, followed in 1936 by Time Supply. In 1937 the purse was boosted to 0,000, maintaining that value ever since. Seabiscuit garnered 1,780 in 1937, largest purse to date, other winners in sequence being Menow, Fighting Fox, Eight Thirty, War Relic and Whirlaway.
