Y., April 12.— A small field is in prospect for Saturdays 37th running of the 0,000 added Excelsior Handicap at one mile and one-sixteenth. Racing secretary and handicapper John B. Campbell regards four horses as the backbone of the race, with only a few others as possibilities for the week-end fixture. The four probables" are Belair Studs Apache, 123 pounds; Havahome Stables Eurasian, 119; Tom Heards Boysy, 114; and Mrs. T. Christophers Grey Wing, 109. The possibilities include Greentree Stables Devil Diver, who is top weight under 129 and is pointing for the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico, May 6, in which he has only 124. The Paumonok winner may fill Saturdays engagement if the track is fast. Slide Rule is another remote possibility for the Excelsior, who also is being pointed for the Dixie and is not considered likely to pick up his 126-pound burden Saturday. Considerably more likely is the prospect of Alex Barth starting in the Excelsior under his comparative feather of 105 pounds. The Millbrook stable speedster was scratched from the Paumonok on opening day, but headed Moon Maiden in the King Saxon Handicap at the Excelsior distance. Rounders Possibility William Helis Irish-bred Rounders, who gets in the Excelsior with 120 pounds, is considered a possibility by Campbell, but he has not raced since the New Orleans Handicap on February 19, in which he was second a head back of Marriage. His best work since coming to Belmont Park was a recent seven furlongs in l:314s, which may not be enough. Marriage has not checked in from Florida at this writing and will hardly race right off the train should he arrive before Saturday. The only other potential Excelsior can-1 didate Campbell visualizes at the moment is Rascal, who is assigned 102 pounds and had early speed in a minor race on opening day. If only Apache, Eurasian, Boysy and Grey Wing compete for Saturdays 0,000 prize, it should be a better contest than the lack of numbers might indicate. Apache was apparently a bit short when he ran second to Devil Diver in the six- furlong Paumonok and is expected to run a better race Saturday, despite the add«-d distance. Boysy also seemed a bit short in the Paumonok and that race may have done him a world of good. Eurasian was approaching his best form at the end of the Hialeah meeting, but has been with- drawn from two engagements thus far at this young meeting. Grey Wing was feared by his trainer to be "short" when he went to the post in [yesterdays feature at a mile and a sixteenth, but was highly impressive as he led throughout, drawing away to a five-length lead in the stretch. At the weights, he is sure to have a following on Saturday and he does not lack for class.
