I.. April 12.— The Nar- - ragansett Racing Association ushered in l c the 1944 New England season today, when l t a crowd of 15,000 braved the chilly weather r t and turned out for the inaugural of the 6 I 28-day meeting. The initial four days of f the current -ession are to be run for War r t Relief and charity and the opening pre- - saged a highly successful year for the e j swank Rhode Island plant. Despite the , "off" strip and a steady drizzle of rain I which fell throughout the entire matinee, ;, the enthusiastic throng on hand welcomed i 1 the return of King Thoroughbred in i auspicious fashion. Wagering moved along g 1 briskly and track officials stated that the e 1 days mutuel handle surpassed that of" f- * 1943 when the Gansett track opened its s i racing year on a Saturday. ! Loveday carried Mrs. W. H. Flemmings s 1 silks to a popular triumph in the Inau- - I gural Purse. Given a snug ride by McMul-1_ len, Loveday reached the end of the one e • mile and a sixteenth trip a length and d [ ■ three-quarters before Mrs. W. Renards s Mixer, who bested F. A. Piarullis Legation n by five lengths for the place award. Only y six went to the post for the feature offer- - i ing, including Ball Player, White Hope and d First Draft, who followed the placed horses :s to the wire in that order. The Flemming mare, who shouldered d 102 pounds in the Inaugural, stepped d the distance over the sloppy track in 1:48, 8, commendable time. Loveday, who was re-?? !- cently shipped to Narragansett from Flor-"s: •- ida, won her first purse of the year and. i, favored in the speculation, returned in n the "tote." Starter Buddy Wingfield sent the small .11 field away in good alignment and Mixer ET was first to show in front with Legation n next and Loveday no better than fourth. h. At the break, McMullen did not hurry the ie Flemming mare and permitted his mount lfc to save ground during the first six furlongs is while Mixer and Legation engaged each other in a sharp duel for the early ad van -1P tage. Swinging into the stretch, Loveday y moved to the leaders and, when settled, she e held a length and a half advantage over r Mixer, who did not have the speed to 0 match the victor. Mixer continued gamely v enough through the home lane after be-I - ing headed and easily saved second honors s over the faltering Legation. Ball Player, r: who did not fancy the sloppy going, could 2 do no better than fourth and he was well ■ beaten at the wire.
