Y., April 12.— Sportsman "■ and former gentleman jockey David Dows. s* 58. Locust Valley, L. I., today was appointed ?" by Gov. Thomas E. Dewey a mem-s ber of New York State Racing Commission m to succeed Col. John Hay Whitney. New ™ York, who resigned last year. He will , serve the unexpired portion of Whitneys [s term, which ends May 1, 1944, and then *? will serve a full six-year term from that at date. The state senate confirmed the ap-t p" pointment today. For many years Dows was a breeder of f horses and formerly owned a large racing lg stable, which he maintained at Irvington-i, n on-Hudson and Brookville. He trained and 1 rode his own jumpers in steeplechases and trained and drove his ow ntrotting horses, Dows is a former member of the Turf and Field Club at Belmont Park and his colors "J were carried both in thoroughbred races 2 and on the grand circuit. In 1942, his Black c, Rod broke the worlds record for a 20-mile trial against time. Dows also was a member of the Meadow 5 Brook Polo Club and played on several of . their famous polo teams. He no longer :er r maintains a racing stable, but instead is a breeder of Angus and Hereford cattle his y 2.000-acre stock farm at Bradley. S. C. He graduated from Yale in 1908 and became associated with Naylor and Company, y v New York City, pig iron and iron ore merchants. *LJ He served as a captain in World p~| War I., after which he- became associated j° with W. R. Grace and Company, retiring * in 1931. He was elected Nassau County sheriff " in 1931 and county purchasing agent in 1935. At present he is a director of the Grace J2 National Bank of New York and the Moose ZT Mountain, Ltd.. a large iron mine in Can-lada.
