► Assault Nears Record R. J. Kleberg, Jr.s Assault added 5,400 to his 1946 earnings when he triumphed in the Belmont Stakes, making his total for the year 99,-020. He has now gleaned only ,255 less than William Woodwards Gallant Fox, who won 08,275 in 1930, the highest single-year total on record. "The Fox" started 10 times as a three-year-old, winning nine of his races, including the three "Triple Crown" events. Assault, in addition to taking the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, led home his foes in the Experimental Handicap No. 1 and the Wood Memorial Stakes. He suffered his lone defeat in the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs, finishing fourth to Rippey. Spy Song and With Pleasure. If the Bold Venture colt escapes injury he is almost certain to establish a new seasonal earnings standard. His total earnings, 316,270 in two sea-1 sons place him twelfth en the list of the worlds leading money winners.
