Lincoln Handicap Next Local Fixture Routers Must Go Mile and Quarter Frisky Spirit to Vie With Chance Taker, Ten Others In Todays Drake Purse HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 1.— Still hoping for a fair shake from the weatherman, the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club heads into its fourth week of its 30-day meeting, with the 5,000 Lincoln Handicap holding down top billing for the week. The mile and one-quarter grind for three-year-olds and upward will be run Saturday and is the only remaining stakes scheduled for the meeting. The result of todays La Salle Handicap probably will determine the number and class of starters in the Lincoln, although there is a chance that several newcomers to this array will see action in the event. Although the better class of horses will remain in their barns Monday, after a week of heavy duty when they competed in the Francis S. Peabody Memorial and todays La Salle, there are several interesting contents up for decition, with the Drake, mile and one-sixteenth for four-year-olds and upward, playing the stellar role. Booked as the sixth race on the program, this middle-distance affair will bring together a dozen shifty performers, most of whom have impressed with fine performances at this meeting. Because of the weight allotments and the fact that a number of the entrants have been competing in sprints the task of selecting the probable contenders presents a big problem. Finished Fast to Take Place in Last William M. Mikels Frisky Spirit, who has been flashing grand stretch speed in recent sprint races, is among those who will attempt to carry on over the additional distance. On Memorial Day the stouthearted gelded son of Ariel-Toyo showed one of his smartest efforts of the meeting when he came from tenth place in a three-quarter dash to finish a fast-closing second to Santa Claus. Prior to that the veteran won, also running in the same manner. He is regarded as a fine "off" track horse and if the course remains sticky his chances will be enhanced. A recent winner over the same distance as that scheduled Monday, is Mrs. E. M. Kohoufs Chance Taker. A steady sort of gelding who has won three races since the season opened at Sportsmans Park and who has finished close up several times. The son of Matadi-Ola Lee displayed his top race on May 24, when he easily trounced Bodens Pal, War Wise, Zo Zo, Lady Flares and Manadroit. Zo Zo, the veteran gelding who appears to have staled off considerably, will again meet Chance Taker, and Lady Flares is another entered who finished far back of the Kohout gelding when they last met. The pacemaker in the affair probably will be H. G. Beckmans Little Milly. a mare who returned to the top of her form the other day with a front-running score over Smolensko, Rosemere Chief, Fireworks, Huri Horn Hari, Star Thorne, March On and Colonel Don. Her races this season have been confined to the shorter distances. Whether or not she can hold herself together Monday is a question the form players will ponder over at great length. Others slated to see action in the race are Letter V.. Sky Wolf, Mighty Lucky, Credentials, Latent, Feather-Bob and K. Durable.
