Assaults Conquest of Triple Crown Stimulates Turf Patrons in Southwest Plan May Be Formulated to* Card 00,000 Special Race At Arlington Downs for Colt FORT WORTH, Texas, June 7. — Assaults smashing victories in the fabulous "Triple Crown" events, climaxed last Saturday when the Texas-bred son of Bold Venture — Igual, by Equipoise, won the mile and one -half Belmont Stakes for Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and King Ranch, has stimulated the entire Southwest as never before, and once more attention is focused on the fact that this champion three-year-old colt first saw the light of day in the Lone Star State, where, paradoxically, there is no racing under legal supervision or wagering. Since the King Ranch chestnut won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, there has been a tremendous appeal for Assaults return to his home state, and it is possible that owner Kleberg might be prevailed upon to listen to the publics clamor and allow Assault to participate in a program whereby the rank and file of Texans, those who were not able to witness the three - year - old in action at Churchill Downs, Pimlico or Belmont Park, would be able to see the champion in action. Some fantastic schemes already have been hatched. Some groups would petition Governor Coke Stevenson to issue a proclamation honoring Assault, owner Kleberg, trainer Max Hirsch, and even make Jockey Mehrtens a Texan so that it would be a 100 per cent Texas celebration. Others believe a plan might be formulated whereby ► 00,000 might be put up for a special i race, Assault against the rest of the three-year-olds, ■ and which would feature a days i program at Arlington Downs, this being the only track in the state which might be I readied in time and which could handle the countless thousands who would make | the trek to Arlington to see the Texas-bred I champion defend his laurels. Several other tracks in the state offer possibilities, but none can compare with Arlington . Downs for the presentation of such a , program . And it is understood that E. Paul , Waggoner, who, with his brother, Guy, L. Waggoner, controls the palatial Arlington 1 track, is in a receptive mood to entertain any program honoring Assault and the folks who made him. Waggoner recently concluded a highly successful venture at Vernon in the Santa Rosa Round-Up, and while Arlington Downs 5 has been used for a variety of projects since I racing was curtailed, the track always has 5 been kept in shape and it would require little ; effort to bring it into racing shape. At any t rate, Assault is the main topic in Texas 5 . these days, and if it so happens he comes back, he will get a royal welcome.
