Sir Sprite in Decisive Score Over Air Sailor Finishes Two and Half Lengths Before Choice in Detroit Dash DETROIT, Mich., June 8. — The Black Gold Combination Purse, a gallop of one mile and a sixteenth for a ,000 prize, attracted six good distance performers here today and resulted in a clever victory for O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite when the son of Ariel led home the favored Air Sailor from the stable of T. D. Suhl by two and a half lengths. J. Harts outsider Baum-bach was third of the half dozen, being beaten off ten lengths. R. S. McLaughlins Canadian bred Kingarvie was tasting his first defeat in ten starts as he could do no better than fourth, an additional four lengths away. Rip Away was fifth for A. Graffagnini and G r i s s o m and Shermans Unconditional trailed far back throughout after breaking in a tangle. The winner was timed in l:462/5 and earned ,250 by his score. He had previously accounted for the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap at the meeting. Air Sailor was hustled to the front in the run for the first turn and Rip Away elected to accompany him with Kingarvie right at hand. The latter was unable to keep up but the leading pair raced as a team down the backstretch. On the turn Ripaway was through and it was here that Sir Sprite was sent into closer contention from his position back of the early leaders. Hart took no chances. Baumbach had raced closer up than expected and when the pace of the early leaders killed off Kingarvie and Rip Away he was able to annex third honors without difficulty. Van Bergs Here Goes came from close to the early pace in the first race to oust the weakening Ballacolas from command in the stretch and create a gap of a length and a half before M. Smiths fast-finishing Red Plush at the end of the six furlongs. Ballacolas was able to save the show award in the field of twelve. The winner was overlooked in the wagering and returned 2.40. Bright Steel, racing for Mrs. George C. White accounted for the second race when he dominated most of the running to maintain an advantage of a length over Mrs. E. Farris Dicks Gal with third in the field of eight going to Dearborn Stables Pere Markette. Bright Steel was installed favorite and returned .20 and the Daily Double combination was worth 2.10.
