Arlington Training 1/ Tempo Stepped Up J Several Calumet Horses , Seen in Pleasing Trials; . Murlogg Stable on Hand ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., June 10.— Although work on the gigantic improvement program that has transformed Arlington Park into possibly the finest race track, in many respects, in the nation, is not quite completed, the feverish pitch which was evident up to last week has sub- i sided and craftsmen are putting on the j finishing touches as next Mondays big I opening nears. Out in the shedrows and on the main track where the training goes on, however, the pressure is being applied to the star thoroughbreds as their trainers point them for the opening week of the meeting, and the attractive stakes schedule that is designed to fit any type of high class horse. Ben Jones and his powerful Calumet Farm stable has been particularly active during the last 10 days. The arrival of Armed and others from the East have completed the stable, and from here on the veteran Jones and his son, Jimmy, will "sweat em for the brass" to fit them for their impending engagements. In Earnest, the three-year-old who was regarded as a key Kentucky Derby hope until he was taken out of hard training last spring, was on the track Saturday for a nice half in :48%, which was an indication that he is about ready for more serious work later • this week. The distance campaigner, Pot o Luck, has also been unusually inactive, having worked a half in :54 on Sat- . urday. This morning he went through an easy five-furlong jaunt. One of the most ! | promising two-year-olds in the stable, Jane Gail, also breezed three-eighths in :36%. I Others in the Jones-trained menage who i I worked over the week-end were Pep Well, three-eighths in :38% breezing, and Hail ! Victory, a clever five-eighths in 1:01 % handily. Horses continued to arrive from all points of the country. The most distinguished arrivals over the week-end was s the smart stable, trained by C. C. Norman. lJ In his care are the Murlogg Farms Fighting Step, Bergolator, Take Me Away, and j three other two -year-olds, and E. A. Bischoffs Song o War and Jonance. • George South, who will ride these horses ■ here, came with the stable. Among the jockeys, Basil James is the f most prominent rider on the grounds. jl James, who returned to brilliant form after serving several years in the forces, will ride ? the horses conditioned by Carleton Slim Roles, who trains the Mrs. Ada L. Rice , thoroughbreds, including Snow Boots, 3 Sirde, and 19 others. Snow Boots established a new worlds record for a mile and a sixteenth during the Santa Anita meeting ■ when he blazed the distance in 1:41%. 5 "
