After three long years of darkness, Arlington Park will open once again in all its lustre and beauty Monday when the thoroughbred racing spotlight shifts to this outstanding establishment for 36 days of sport. Completely renovated at an expenditure of several hundred thousand dollars and with the finest collection of thoroughbred horses in America on the grounds, or on their way, prospects for a brilliant meeting is assured. A large crew of workmen were putting the finishing touches on the plant this morning and by the time patrons begin to pour through the gates Monday, it will be spic and span and all set for operation. Benjamin F. ijinaneimer, executive director, ana nis associates, have performed wonders in not only bringing this swank course back to condition, but adding expansive improvements that will make a sure hit with the turf enthusiasts, whether they are devotees of the exclusive Post and Paddock Club, the regular clubhouse or the grandstand. Air conditioned dining rooms for all, numerous rest rooms at points of vantage throughout the track, convenient wagering sections on all levels of the grandstand, are only a few of the moderized improvements designed for the publics comfort. With all these changes, the meeting couldnt be anything but second rate without the proper class of horses. In this respect, Arlington has already located in its stabling area a bevy of champions and prospective champions with more coming in daily. Armed on Grounds The Calumet Farms Armed, of course, is the king of the lot. The winner of the Widener, Dixie, Suburban-and several other stakes arrived here recently from New York to swell the Calumet string to the largest outfit on the grounds. Pot o Luck, winner of the Classic Stakes, held at Washington Park last year, is a star in his own right and there are many others, especially the two-year-olds in the Calumet menage, who are almost certain to make their presence felt. The Maine Chance Farm, with the queenly Beaugay, vho was voted the leading two-year-old of last season, holding down the leading role, is also here. Jet Pilot, the remarkable undefeated two-year-old in the barn, is expected to make a strong bid for the rich two-year-old features. Then there is Dixiana, with Spy Song, Woolford Farm with Historian, John Marsch with Preoccupy, the Mrs. Ada L. Rice stable with the worlds record holder, Snow Boots and Sirde and many others. The stake program, which has been carefully coordinated with that of Washington Park and which will carry through 67 days for the two meetings, will carry more than Continued on Page Five Racing Returns Today To Arlington Course Initial Meeting at Spacious North Side Course Since 1942 Continued from Page One a quarter of a million dollars in added money, with overnight purses scheduled to run as high as 0,000, which will make it the richest summer race meeting in the country. Heading the first weeks program will be the 0,000 Clang Handicap, a seven-furlong dash for three-year-olds and upward, on Wednesday, in which many of the leading handicap horses will compete, while on Saturday a double feature will find the Hyde Park Stakes, 0,000 and the Princeas Doreen, 5,000 added on top. The Hyde Park is for two-year-olds at five and one- half furlongs, while the Princess Doreen is for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Heading the opening program Monday will be the Spokane Purse, a 0,000 mile and one-eighth event, which, incidentally will be exactly one full turn of the track, this being the circumference of this course. A small field of five horses, aged three years and upward, will contest the issue, with Mrs. Ada L. Rices Richmond Jac, a colt who showed an exceedingly smart race in the 0,000 Suburban Handicap on Memorial Day at Belmont Park, looming as an odds-on favorite in the jaunt. A four-year-old son of Jacopo Richmond Rose, the Rice speedster, who is housed in the same barn with Snow Boots and Sirde, gets in the race with 111 pounds, which under the conditions gives him a decided advantage. In the Suburban he finished fourth to Armed after racing in the thick of contention all the way. He is a West Coast development and at present is re garded as one of the top handicap horses in the country. His main opposition in the Spokane is likely to come from either J. C. Stones Sgt. Spence, a handy winner at Hawthorne before bowing to The Dude in his last race and Old Kentuck, a speedster in the Walmac Stables barn, who is in the midst of a comeback. Sgt. Spence, a three-year-old is allowed in the race with the feather impost of 101 pounds while Old Kentuck must carry 111. Top weight of the field will be Mrs. Clyde Troutts Take Wing, another who is on the comeback trail, but who disappointed badly when he was beaten by sixteen lengths in his most recent performance at Hawthorne. Shut Eye, owned by Mrs. T. Ott, has been competing against a lower grade of horses with some success and it is considered the outsider in the field. Post time throughout the meeting has been set for 2:15 p. m., including Saturdays and holidays and the daily double races will be the usual first two.
