Education Three-Length Victor Over Preoccupy Hooper Colt Impresses in Alsab Score as Lincoln Meeting Closes HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., June 15. Another bubble of potential greatness was burst when Mrs. Frederick W. Hoopers Education, a Florida development, came back to the races after more than three months of inactivity and swarmed all over John Marschs heralded Preoccupy in the ,000 Alsab Purse here this afternoon before a baffled gathering of 17,244. The handsome black son of Ariel Faculty, who was hardly conceded a chance by most of the observers who sent Preoccupy postward at the rate of 1 to 3 in the wagering, turned in a flashy performance to score by three open lengths. He picked up his heavy impost of 125 pounds and was clocked in :59, just four-fifths of a second off the track record for the five furlongs. Mrs. A. M. Creechs Masico Lad was third in the four-horse field, while Mrs. J. Parks and Mrs. C. Scotts Parklyn was a distant last. The latter, however, had no chance to participate seriously, for the webbing on his stirrup iron broke soon after the start. The Alsab was the most attractive race on a program that marked the close of the most successful meeting ever conducted by the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club, which switched the session here because of material shortages. The average daily pari-mutuel pool went slightly over one million dollars for the 30 days of sport and the crowds showed a decided increase over any other year. Despite his comparatively wide margin, Education didnt exactly have it all his own way in subduing Preoccupy. The winner of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes was forced to turn on the heat throughout and it wasnt until they were well in the stretch that he drew away. The Marsch speedster gave his usual Continued on Page Four Education Three-Length Victor Over Preoccupy Hooper Colt Impresses in Alsab Score as Lincoln Meeting Closes Continued from Page One alert performance at the gate and he broke completely clear, but in a flash Education dashed up and they settled down to a red hot fight that lasted all the way around the turn and into the stretch. Hardly a head separated them until nearing the eighth pole, where Education applied extreme pressure which his smart rival couldnt stand. The Au Revoir Handicap, ,000 six-furlong event, which was co-featured with the Alsab, produced a surprise winner when C. L. Du Puys Appleknocker came along with clever speed in the stretch and drew off into a three and one-half lengths advantage at the wire. The Dee B. Stables Hydrant managed to get up in the last stride to nose out L. Schlossers Witch Sir for the place in a race that was run in 1:11. Appleknocker was held off the fast early pace established by Witch Sir and Final Glory, and moving to the extreme outside in the stretch he breezed past his rivals with the utmost of ease. Hydrant, another who failed to match the early speedster, showed a fin effort, especially in final stages. Jockey Steve Brooks, who led the riders in the point of winners for the meeting, had the honor of adding a "Daily Double" score to his fine record for the season, in winning with Bitter Berry and Handy Lad. Brooks whipped to the finish, the third winner of the afternoon, when he gained a hairline decision with Sand Storm in the fourth race.
