Greenwood Racing Club Officially Cancels Meet Ontario Track Operators Hold Hopes for Session at Woodbine TORONTO, Ont., May 2. — Col. K. R. Marshall, president of the Ontario Jockey Club and Greenwood Racing Club, has officially cancelled the meeting of the Greenwood Racing Club, which was scheduled to open the Ontario racing season on May 9. He is, however, hopeful that differences between the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association, Canadian division, and the operators of Ontario race tracks will be settled in time to permit the meeting of the Ontario Jockey Club on May 17. Following are partial quotes from Colonel Marshalls first official statement: "Despite statements inspired in other quarters appearing in the press, I contend that in this connection no blame can be attached to the Greenwood Racing Club or the Ontario Jockey Club. We have always been agreeable to meeting with a committee of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association at any time convenient to both interests. "The main point at issue was an arbitrary demand for a minimum purse of ,500. I gave my reasons why both clubs would be financially unable to meet this demand. Moreover, it was apparent that we were being unjustly compared with racing associations in the United States. "Notice has been received that a meeting of the HBPA will take place next Monday, May 5, for the purpose of deciding whether or not the horsemen will support two meetings scheduled to run at Woodbine Park. It will be, of course, too late to spend any further time considering matters pertaining to the race meeting of the Greenwood Racing Club. It is hoped, however, that the horsemen present at this meeting will decide to co-operate and race with the Ontario Jockey Club during its meeting scheduled to open on May 17. "In connection with this meeting of the HBPA, it is hoped that the recognized democratic system of the secret ballot will be used in ascertaining the wishes of those present."
