» Derby Candidates In Final Blowouts Jet Pilot, Cosmic Bomb, W L Sickle, Star Reward Among Those Working CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2. — "Blowouts" as final preps for tomorrows seventy-third running of the Kentucky Derby were in order on the part of six candidates for fame in the classic, while others were on the track and limited their activity to gallops. Jet Pilot, the Maine Chance Farm contender, stepped a smart three furlongs in :37, breezing. He obviously was at home in the muddy footing which prevailed. Like all others, he worked around the "dogs." The traek was tending to dry near the outer rail, but in the middle there still was lots of water evident. W L Sickle and Stepfather, the W-L Ranch entry, both were sent three furlongs by trainer Graceton Philpot. Stepfather breezed in :38, and W L Sickle went the same distance in :38%. Both horses appeared to fancy the footing, and immediately on returning to the barn trainer Phil-pot announced both horses would go post-ward. "Id kind of like to see it stay muddy, now that I have seen W L Sickle work," commented Philpot after the breeze. "Stepfather also seems to fancy the mud. Im satisfied with the condition of both horses and believe we have a good chance on any kind of a track, but our chances would be best if more rain falls." Cosmic Bomb, the William Helis color-bearer, was sent a handy half in :50%. The horse was allowed to turn in his own trial and was not urged at any stage. Star Reward traveled the same distance in :52%, breezing. This horse looked excellent in the spin and, coupled with his good race in the Derby Trial last Tuesday, should have no excuse tomorrow. Bullet Proof, winner of the Chesapeake Stakes, also breezed a half in :53y5. Bullet Proof also came out of the drill in fine shape. Double Jay, who turned in a disappointing effort in the Derby Trial, was given a slow three furlongs in :42, breezing, and his connections said after the work that Double Jay was a definite starter and they were confident he would turn in a much better effort tomorrow than he displayed on Tuesday. King Bay, pointing for the Preakness, was given a prep for that race a week from tomorrow by working a full mile. He journeyed once around in 1:45%, handily.
