A crowd of 11,000 at Soldier Field in Chicago saw the Army and Navy football teams play one year; Notre Dame and California played to a crowd almost as large. Participation in the race of a couple of horses that have been racing in California and that are owned there, of the New Orleans-owned Cosmic Bomb, and of horses representing Florida, Eastern and Middle-West interests, has spread the Kentucky Derby fever from coast to coast. High government officials, many movie stars from Hollywood, capitalists and thoroughbred breeders from South America, Indian potentates and men and women prominent in the business world will be on hand for the Derby in greater numbers than ever. In stride with the gala decorations and flora beautifying the Downs will be the gorgeous spring styles that will be seen in the dress of the hundreds of members of the fair sex who will come from Hollywood, New York, Chicago, and other fashion centers, to vie with the belles of Kentucky in a parade of fashion. Special Trains From All Points Special trains started rolling into Louisville about the middle of the week. One got in Wednesday from San Antonio, Texas; others followed later in the week from Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis, Mobile, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, New York and other spots. A survey showed that 557 private railroad cars would bring well- to-do race lovers into Louisville and with all airlines putting on extra flights and nationwide purchases of new autos, the crowds that will arrive via highway will top any that ever streamed into Louisville via auto and bus. Two tunnels now run under the race track to connect with the center field, where every facility has been provided for the comfort and convenience of the thousands who will occupy the benches, the concrete tiers and the standroom there. Ample betting sheds and refreshment stands are provided, the mutuel wing being underground to protect it from the weather. Many years ago, bleacher seats were erected around the turns on the front side of the track and those are all ready to hold enormous crowds. The Churchill Downs center-field never was more beautiful than it will be for Saturday afternoons races. Many years ago president Matt Winn established the Downs own nurseries for growing roses, tulips, and other beautiful plants and flowers; magnificent gardens beautify the infield just across from the clubhouse. These gardens are fenced off from that part of the center-field where spectators will congregate, but will be the stage for various bands and any programs that will be put on before the Derby. Churchill Downs gates will be opened at 8 oclock, and the first race will go to the post at 11:30 a. m. Central Standard Time. There will be nine races on the card Saturday, post time for the Derby being moved up to 4:45 so the huge throng can begin evacuating the Downs much before darkness sets it.
