Their comments follow: l CHURCHILL DOWNS KEENE DAINGERFIELD JR.— I look for Phalanx to win, and have liked him since c early spring. JACK HANOVER— Jet Pilot is in the best condition, and is coming up to the race j in fine fashion. On Trust is my second choice. VICTOR GOUSHA — The performance of Star Reward in the Derby Trial was very " impressive. RAYMOND WHITE— Phalanx is the horse for me. His record is very impressive. c JAKE GLENN — Star Rewards excellent effort in the Derby Trial convinced me. JAKE LOWENSTEIN— In my estimation, Phalanx is the solid horse and will be the ■ one to beat tomorrow. J. C. GIT J .EM— I would say that Phalanx * is the best horse, and that the Derby distance of a mile and a quarter should be * to his liking. JACK CARTER — Phalanx is my choice. None of the Derby horses that have started here in preliminary races has im- J pressed me. TOM JOLLEY— I think that Phalanx is the ] best horse and should prove the winner . of the Derby. MONTE PARKE— I like Phalanx and W L Sickle. However, if I should have to . choose between the two I would give therv nod to Phalanx. TOMMY ROOT— My selection is Faultless, because I think he is the best horse. I FRANK PODESTA— I like Phalanx because I think he is the best horse. I W. B. STUCKI — Phalanx is very well trained and should be able to go the full , Derby route. Faultless will be the main contender. DWIGHT DENHAM— In seeing the eligi- . bles in Kentucky this spring, my selec-i tion would have to be Phalanx. RICHARD T. WATTS— I see Jet Pilot and Phalanx in a close fit, but from Jet Pilots impressive one mile and a quar- ] ter work recently, I would have to place him first. AL WELLMAN— Faultless. I liked the manner in which he won at Keeneland. WILLIAM CRUMP— Phalanx should have no difficulty winning if he likes the rac-! ing strip. I give W L Sickle a good chance. CHARLES SANBORN— Phalanx, the rea- i son he is just the best. I believe On Trust, Jet Pilot and Star Reward will | finish behind him in that order. LEE NILES— I have liked Faultless all along. He has raced well and he has a fine trainer, HENRY FORREST — Phalanx has come up to the race the way a horse should. Other than Phalanx its an open race. J. GRAHAM BROWN— Faultless, if the track is fast. Phalanx, if it should rain hard enough to muddy the course. JOHN MARSCH— I look for Phalanx and Faultless to finish one-two in that order. J. A. CHAMBERS — I rather fancy the chances held by Jet Pilot. He may be a better colt than Phalanx, E. LEIGH COTTON— My choice is Pha-; lanx. T. C. MELROSE— Star Reward with Cos-t mic Bomb in second place. S. BRYANT OTT— I believe Phalanx, Jet Pilot and Bullet Proof hold the better chances of victory. Jockey DON SCURLOCK — Faultless — I will string along with the master Derby trainer, Ben Jones. H. SEARCY — Star Reward is my choice. It looks to me as if he is ready to go the full Derby route. J. P. SALLEE — Jet Pilot appears to be the horse. He is well trained and should be at his peak for the Derby. L. N. WILLEY— Faultless. He is a "real horse." JEFF ONEILL — Star Reward is my selec-i tion. He appeared a real "come up" horse in the Trial, Jockey JAMES McCOY — Star Reward is the one for me. I liked his Derby Trial effort. MILTON RIESER— If the track is fast, I would say Faultless. Otherwise, I would take Star Reward. CARL MYERS — Faultless is the horse that has impressed me. His race in the Derby Trial was a "corker." JOSEPH HARDWICK— Faultless on a fast track and Jet Pilot if the course is muddy. ROSCOE GOOSE— I believe it is between Phalanx and Faultless. Their races have been very good and there is no reason why they should not run to past efforts tomorrow. JAMAICA FRANK FRANKEL— Who last year refused to make a Derby selection, as he felt he T" ► i J l c j " c ■ * * J ] . . I I , . ] was too new to racing, cast a strong vote for Phalanx, saying, "He seems the best stayer in the race." FRANK CLELLAND— I think that Star Reward will jog, although I would like to see Cosmic Bomb win. Jockey GARNER — Phalanx is my choice. Strictly a two-horse race between he and Faultless. L. V. BELLEW JR.— Phalanx is the best looking horse. Best horse for the distance and has the best rider. grover NOEL— Phalanx looks like the winner all over, and I want to see Arcaro win his fourth Derby. FELDC RANDO — Phalanxs last race was powerful and he will have a good rider. He is a good horse. SPORTSMANS PARK W. T. BEEZLEY — Phalanx looks good to me. J. J. GREELY — Syl Veitch appears to hold the best hand with Phalanx. JOE BOLLERO — Ill take the chalk if it is Phalanx. FRANK NUGENT — Phalanx appears to have an edge. H. H. FAUSETT — On Trust may be better than generally thought. O. L. HOPPER — Given good racing luck, it should be Phalanx. GLEN GORBET — Anything can happen, but Ill take Phalanx. RALPH BOHN— Ill string along with the two-year-old champion, Double Jay. L. B. KINDLE — Whoever beats Phalanx will take it all. Jockey ANTHONY SKORONSKI — Ive been on On Trust. Do not underestimate him. JAMES SANDS — In an open race Ill take Phalanx. JAMAICA BING CROSBY — On Trust. Must string along with California against the rest. MAX HIRSCH — Phalanx is my choice and he looks like the logical one. JIM HEALEY— Bullet Proof will be running at the finish and thats where it counts. JOHN SWISHER— Bullet Proof looks like the best finisher in my estimation. ABE HALLOW — Phalanx, with Liberty Road next. The latter is a real dark horse. LOUIS PRIMA— I like On Trust, but have switched to Jet Pilot, especially since Eric Guerin is going to ride him. TED ATKINSON— Who will be riding Coincidence at Jamaica — It looks like the most wide open Derby I can remember Continued on Page Eight Phalanx Is Selected By Majority of Turfmen Support Also for Faultless and Jet Pilot in Downs Classic Continued from Page Three but of the horses who raced in the East I like Jet Pilot. FRANK KEARNS— I like the big horse that won here, Phalanx. Hes got speed and can run all day. MAURICE "Dancer" HYAMS — The Derby? Why, Jet Pilot, no one else. MATTY GLENNON— Phalanx. Yes, I said Phalanx. HIRSCH JACOBS — Phalanx looks like the one that will go on. He finishes his races. ISIDORE BIEBER— I like Jet Pilot. He has the speed. HARRIS BROWN— I like Phalanx, with Faultless and Jet Pilot the ones for him to beat. FRANK CATRONE— I dont see how they can beat Phalanx. PIMLICO B. F. CHRISTMAS— Phalanx. I like his breeding and he is a horse who will come from behind and therefore should be in no trouble. W. E. CHARLES — I select Faultless, because he is a horse who will run the final eighth as fast as he runs the first eighth. H. GUY BEDWELL — Off his clever victory in the Chesapeake Stakes, I believe Bullet Proof has a royal chance. ALFRED GWYNNE VANDERBILT — I think Phalanx will win. J. BOWES BOND — The day Phalanx fell at Pimlico last fall, he was running so fast he couldnt possibly have been beaten. He looks every inch a champion. PAT BRADY — Phalanx is my selection. I believe he is the best horse. JACK HEALEY— Phalanx should win. He looks the most impressive of the Derby horses. JIM RYAN — I saw Phalanx train all winter at Camden and think he will stay the Derby trip. JIMMY JONES — Faultless* hard race in the Derby Trial, was just what he needed for Saturdays race. I believe he will be the first Trial winner to go on to annex the Derby. SUFFOLK DOWNS JIMMY BUTWELL — Looks like Whitney Phalanx is a cinch. He looks like the best horse and the best jockey — Arcaro — will be in the saddle. Nothin to it. MELVTN "SUNSHINE" CALVERT — Must go along with Butwell. Phalanx is a strapping colt who should fancy the mile and a quarter. And Arcaro cant harm him as the rider. R. ROBERTSON, JR. — Bullet Proof came from the "clouds" to win the Chesapeake at Havre and that effort showed me that he can run as far as three-year-olds are asked to step at this time of the year. A repeater would make him the Derby winner. AVERY E. BROWN— Phalanx looks much the best. He seems to be as fit as hands can make him and the Derby distance is just right. TEDDY COX— Experience has taught me to show a great amount of respect for Ben Jones when hes prepping a horse for a big stake. Therefore, were taking Faultless, whose record this season speaks for itself. IRVING GUSHEN— Ill be riding with Phalanx. He is a true distance runner and hasnt been rushed too hard after filling out well during a winter of ease.
