Jacobs stretch-running Stymie charged from last place in the Metropolitan Mile today to electrify a throng of 48,632 cheering fans as he beat Joe W. Browns Brown Mogul by a length. W. L. Branns Gallorette finished another length back and a length and a half before Sunshine Stables Buzfuz. Stymie, ever popular with New Yorkers, was a solid choice and paid .60, after covering the mile in 1:37% with Basil James in the saddle. Todays victory brought the one-time ,500 claim several lengths closer to Whirl-away in the quest for the worlds money-winning leadership. His share of todays purse was 1,650, bringing the total earnings of the son of Equestrian — Stop Watch to 39,935. Whirlaways total stands at 61,161, a figure that cant be augmented by the earnings of his offsprings, who are mn-i? their appearance on the tracks this season. iacymie ran one of his most characteristic races in the Metropolitan. Buzfuz was first out of the gate, far up the chute at the far side of the track, closely followed by King Dorsett and Coincidence, with The Shaker, Pavot, Gallorette, Lets Dance, Jeep, Brown Mogul, Vertigo II., Pellicle and Stymie following. By the time the field had gone a quarter, Stymie was about 15 lengths back of the leader, who was King Dorsett, the New Orleans speedster having been whipped past Buzfuz by Paul Glidewell. King Dorsett continued to lead around the far corner, with Buzfuz close at hand, Continued on Page Three Stymie Finishes Fast for Victory Comes From Last Place to Whip Brown Mogul Length In Metropolitan Handicap Continued from Page One followed by The Shaker, who was beginning to tire; Pavot, who was also weakening; Lets Dance, Brown Mogul, who was moving up; Lets Dance and Gallorette, while Stymie was coming into contention on the outside. King Dorsett stopped abruptly at the head of the stretch, where Buzfuz took command, but began to bear out and Brown Mogul was momentarily blocked. At the ame time, Gallorette challenged in the middle of the track and Stymie swarmed up on the extreme outside with one of the typical rushes that have made him the idol of New York fans. "Nearing the sixteenth pole, Buzfuz appeared to come out on Gallorette, causing her, in turn, to swerve against Stymie and those two came together with a fairly solid bump, while Jack Westrope took advantage of this opening to drive Brown Mogul up on the rail. Stymies rush was irresistible in the final seventy yards ani the muscular chestnut was drawing away with every powerful stride. Brown Mogul finished surprisingly well, while Gallorette also turned in an improved performance, recovering well after her encounter with the winner. Buzfuz just went as far as he could, and held on courageously. Of the others, Pavot was a threat until the stretch, where he tired as if in need of a race. Pellicle passed tired horses, as did Vertigo II. Lets Dance stopped badly after a brief bid at the turn. The major disappointment of the race was Coincidence, who had no apparent excuse, other than his sullen disposition, which apparently caused him to sulk just when it appeared that he might have a chance to go on with a serious challenge at the turn. Intrepid Makes Good Wheatley Stables Intrepid proved fully as much the best in the Laurano Purse that preceded the Metropolitan as expected by the public that backed him down to odds-on. The Son of Snark dwelt at the start, but quickly rushed to the front and coasted the rest of the six furlongs to lead Walter P. Chryslers Stage Mother under the wire by two lengths. Mrs. Rea Warners Capt. Flagg ran an even race to be third, another two lengths away and a neck before Cain Hoy Stables Noble Creek. Abelardo DeLara, who had won the opener with Eternal Lark, completed a double on Intrepid who was doing the same thing for his dam his younger half-brother, Dynamo, having won here yesterday. The colt paid .40 and was clocked in 1:11%. Belair Studs Hyblaze, who had won his previous start at Jamaica, scored a convincing and fairly impressive victory in the second race, a test for three-year-olds, at a mile and a sixteenth. The bay son of Hypnotist reached the wire four lengths before Lazy F Ranchs Nathaniel, whom he caught at the head of the stretch. Earl Sandes Stage Kid was another half length away, while Green tree Stables Column, the favorite, finished a neck out of the money.
