* 1 — — — — — 1 Dinner Party Returns to Best Form to Win Puritan Handicap j , Comes From Behind to Beat * Weathercock at Suffolk as Bel Reigh Falters Badly SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 10. — Mrs. Catherine P. Amodie, Paw-tucket, R. I., sportslady, whose Dinner Party captured the New England Championship last season, saw her favorite thoroughbred suddenly return to his best form here this afternoon and in a furious stretch drive the veteran was up in time to annex the 0,000 Puritan Handicap. Possibly the most popular regular campaigner of the New England season last season, Dinner Party was conceded little or no chance by the majority of the patrons as his straight mutuel of 0.80 reflected. A lengthening neck in back of the winner came D. F. Harringtons Weathercock, while the Cherry Oca Stables Magellan took the show from C. F. Herrmanns Float Me. Mrs. Tilyou Christophers Bel Reigh, easy winner of a pair of previous efforts over this course, was the warm favorite and he was full of run early, only to falter when the important racing began at the head of the stretch. He wound up a weary sixth. Spangled Game Pulls Up The crowd was further disappointed when Spangled Game, owned by Mrs. R. Metcalf k Ber-Mar Farm, bled while on the backstretch and was pulled up. The gelding was second choice in the wagering. Dinner Party, who had been futilely chasing such as Armed, Eternal Reward, Concordian and other aces of the handicap division during the winter in Florida, had raced only once this season at Suffolk. On that occasion he finished seventh, beaten 11 lengths by Magellan, F. B. Eye, Weathercock and others. Today he was his old self. A sore-going sort, he was well warmed up during the pre-race parade and for the best part of the running his task appeared hopeless as he either trailed or remained far in back of the leaders. Bel Reigh, as is his wont, sped out into a daylight lead before any of the others could find their best stride. The second division was formed by Magellan, who slipped through on the rail at the initial turn to save considerable ground; Float Me and Weathercock. The Christopher favorite continued to lengthen his lead on the backstretch and W. L. Taylors efforts to take him under a hold appeared difficult. Magellan, contin- uing to save ground and under the rating of Georgie Hettinger, pegged along in sec- ond place but could not shake off either Weathercock or Float Me. As they made the final bend it was i apparent that Bel Reigns pacemaking proclivities must pay a price — and they did. He shortened his stride, and Magellan moved to the lead. Dinner Party was completely forgotten in the shuffle until his i red and white silks appeared on the extreme outside. Jockey Willie Turnbull had bided his time while the front-runners I killed themselves off and when he settled down for the drive he had a fresh and fit ; thoroughbred under him. He first picked up Bel Reigh, forged [ ahead of Magellan and in the last few i strides he swept by Weathercock to score , by a neck. He raced the mile and a sixteenth . distance in 1:43 Vs.
