Sixteen Sixteen Meet Meet in in Coaching Coaching Club Club Oaks; Oaks; Galloway Galloway Popular Popular Hawthorne Hawthorne Repeater Repeater Dixiana Colt Helps Give Brooks Triple Duck Berry Unable to Cope With Stretch Challenge of Victor Over Heavy Strip HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 19.— Dixiana s robust Count Gallahad colt, Galloway, found the heavy going that prevailed to his liking to lope to an impressive triumph in the featured Topsy Sue Purse at Hawthorne today. At the end of the six and a half furlongs the winner was four lengths before his nearest rival, E. R. Morris Duck Berry, a distance that could have been greater had Steve Brooks, his rider, so desired. The winner had to overcome a loss of ground compelled when Duck Berry carried him wide as they swung into the home lane, but the colt was so much the best that he disposed of this handicap without difficulty. Third in the field of five three-year-olds was Mrs. Emil Denemarks Last Stride, who had been hustled to the front early, but who wilted badly when the real racing began, to be six additional lengths farther back. Flying Ben was fourth for Joe Maumus, seven additional lengths away in the strung-out field, and Mrs. C. Larkins Glaemel brought up the rear almost as far back. Won Last at Churchill Downs Galloway, fresh from convincing score at Churchill Downs, was timed in 1:22% in the heavy footing, and was installed an odds-on choice to return .20 as the fourth winning favorite of the afternoon. Jockey Steve Brooks completed a riding double on the winner, following up his score on Shrewla in the second race. Last Stride was first to show in front as the field was dispatched in perfect alignment by starter Reuben White. Flying Ben accompanied the Denemark representative to the far turn where he chucked it abjectly and Duck Berry moved into the runner-up position before the eventual winner, who was under snug wraps. On the final turn, Galloway was given his head and he swung around the outside of the leaders, and when Duck Berry attempted to meet this challenge, this pair raced as a team into the stretch, where Duck Berry bore out and carried Galloway with him. When clear, however, the race lost all appearance of a spectacle as Galloway moved Continued on Page Six Galloway Popular Hawthorne Repeater in Topsy Sue Purse Continued from Page One away, and the others strung out to remove any semblance of serious contention. Brooks ran his riding tallies to three when he had Bulsel home in the sixth race. The racing strip was heavy following week-end rainfall and intermittent showers fell during the afternoon as the sport moved into its second full week at this point. A crowd of 13,128 turned out for the Monday program. W. F. Mannaghs Liteco was the easiest sort of winner of the six and a half furlongs fourth race that was fashioned for three -year-olds. Ridden by apprentice Ralph Bendinelli, Liteco was steadied within easy reach of the leaders until reaching the stretch turn where she swept to the front with ease and drew out to coast across the finish line with an advantage of six lengths before her nearest rival, Ben Fogelsons Casa Libre. Third went to Woolford Farms Expectation, who was sent out to set the early pace but who found the easy striding winner and the fast-finishing Casa Libre too much for him.
