Grooms Demands at Hollywood Rejected by Owners, Trainers HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calil., May 19. — Owners and trainers of horses awaiting the opening of the Hollywood Park meeting Saturday met here Sunday morning and unanimously rejected a demand from grooms for a 50 minimum salary and 5 per cent of purses won by stables which employ them. The meeting was called by the California Owners and Trainers Association, but it was attended by non-members of the group as well and also by representatives of the grooms. George C. Coutant, formerly a divisional representative of the Grocery Warehouse Mens Union of the A. F. of L., presented the grooms demands. It was pointed out, however, that the stable employes have not yet received their charter from the Teamsters Union, with which they are seeking affiliation, and thus have no standing for group bargaining. Among the horsemen who spoke at the gathering were Neil S. McCarthy, Al Luke, E. C. A. Berger, Rex Ellsworth, Harry Daniels and Don Marlin. Owners asserted that it would be finan cially impossible for them to meet the present demands of grooms, and several of them said that if such demands were imposed on them they would sell their horses and quit the sport.
