St. Germans, Sire of Two Derby Winners, Succumbs Twenty Grand, Bold Venture Sons of Famed Swynford Stallion LEXINGTON, Ky., May 19.— The 26-year-old stallion, St. Germans, sire of the Kentucky Derby winners Twenty Grand and Bold Venture, died here yesterday at Greentree Farm of enteritis. The imported son of Synford was taken seriously ill Saturday at noon and sank rapidly, finally succumbing* yesterday. Twenty Grand won the Derby in the Greentree silks in 1931, while Bold Venture scored in the colors of M. L. Schwartz in 1936. Bold Venture, in turn, sired Assault, 1946 Derby winner and "Horse of the Year." Another of St. Germans famous progeny was St. Brideaux, a sire of note in his own right. St. Germans was one of the nations top sires for several years, having led the sire list in 1931 when represented by 15 performers, one of whom was Twenty Grand. That year his progeny, with 47 winning races, earned 15,585. Of late years, however, he was almost impotent, being represented by only a few foals. Foaled in 1921 and a son of Swynford — Hamoaze, St. Germans was considered the best three-year-old of his year in England. He was second in the Epsom Derby of 1924, which was won by Sansovino, and won the Coronation Stakes and Doncaster Cup. He was purchased from Lord Derby by the late Payne Whitney in 1925 for a reported 25,000 and brought to stand in stud in Kentucky. Upon Payne Whitneys death the horse was willed to his brother, the late Harry Payne Whitney, from whom the latters son, C. V. Whitney, inherited the stallion. When the latter acquired the son of Swynford, he presented him to Mrs. Payne Whitney, late mistress of Greentree Farm, in 1935, and he remained at that establishment from then on.
