Newspaper File on Derby Largest Ever Recorded CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, K „ May 13. — The newspaper file on the 76th Kentucky Derby last Saturday was an all-time record, said George B. Leach, head of the tracks public relations department, today. Leach said the Western Unions local office had advised him to that effect this morning. A total of 312,550 words were filed on Derby Day alone, Leach .said the figures showed. This was approximately 5,000 more words than writers used for describing the 1949 Derby. Leach also revealed that his department handled a record number of reservations for the working press. More than 750 representatives of the press, radio, newsreels, picture services, received press credentials. The biggest increase in demand for press accommodations came from California. "And you know," Leach added, "its amazing how little difficulty there is to handling that bunch of feUows. I dont recall a single complaint from anyone."
