. Heliowise Shows His Splendid Condition To Prove Popular Repeater at Jamaica Fred W. Hoopers Sophomore4 Drives Home Under Colaneri One Length Before Recline By EVAN SHIPMAN Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., April 30.— Fred Hoopers Heliowise, a clever winner of his last at this meeting, came right back with an even more impressive score in this afternoons featured Pharos Purse, a six-furlong sprint that attracted a small but high class field of three-year-olds. Two of the five who started in the Pharos — Recline who finished second and the winner, Heliowise — are eligibles for the Kentucky Derby, but it is pretty certain that neither colt will make the trip to Louisville. At the finish, reached in 1:11%, Heliowise had a length advantage over Hal Price Head-leys Recline, while King Ranchs Mission, equal choice with Heliowise in the wagering, was five lengths farther back, a weary third. Blinker Light was the first to show in front as the field left the gate to a good start on the backstretch. Heliowise and Mission were hot on the leaders heels in the run to the far turn, and "double bug" rider Jack Colaneri took Heliowise out to tackle the Havahome Stables entry be-1 tween the turns, quickly assuming a slight . r ! s 1 ►— — ada vantage. Mission was still running strongly on the rail, but at the quarter pole the King Ranchs son of Omission did not respond when Guerin first made a real demand, it being evident that he is still a little short for such a stiff race. Heliowise, on the other hand, showed his condition in the stretch. The first half, run in :46%, had left him with plenty of reserve, and when Recline came on to challenge at the furlong pole, the Hooper colt, in spite of carrying top weight of 118 pounds, continued with the same determination he had shown two weeks ago against Bernwood. Recline closed ground, but he could never reach the winners flanks, and Missions chances were hopeless . from the time the field reached the head of the stretch. Mission, who won two of his three starts 5 last season, one of his victories being at t the direct expense of the highly regarded J Nullify, was considered one of the best of f Max Hirschs two-year-olds, but this colt t has always been bothered with bad ankles. Fitting him for this campaign has been 1 something of a problem. With the sun beating down in full force for the second time this month, a good , crowd of 24,149 was out to see a card that, with the exception of the Pharos, hardly ; Continued on Page Forty u H ■ II In Pr Vj Va., in en F£ *■ two ca T£ wl R ■fa de fu it* Heliowise Impressive Repeater Pharos Purse at Jamaica Continued from Page One promised much sport. The Charlottesville, horseman, "Doc" Jones took the opening dash with Reduce, and the second ended in a dead-heat between Mrs. Louis Lazares Fancy Talk and Hollowbrook Farms Battle Raider, with the result that Daily Double combinations were cashed. Those holding Reduce and Fancy Talk were rewarded to the tune of 5.60, while the backers of Reduce and Battle Raider received 2.20 for their dividend. Because of last nights heavy shower, the strip was only "good" for the first two races, but was fast thereafter, as was evident when Heliowise shaded 1:12 for six furlongs in the feature. In general, favorites fared well throughout the afternoon.
