J., April 30. — Brandy wine Stables Cochise and Mrs. Andy Schuttingers Ferd, who staged a furious stretch battle right down to the finish of the Grey Lag Handicap at Ja-a maica on Saturday, each has drawn 124,-0 pound assignments to head a list of 50 nominations to the 5,000 Valley Forge Handicap which will be presented on Sat-e urday. A return match between these two stalwarts would be one of the highlights of the 1951 season, but unfortunately, Cochise may instead be started in the Dixie Handi-d cap opening day at Pimlico, it being con-r« sidered that he is better suited to the longer distance of that historic event. Ferd, who is not a nominee to the Dixie, is con-s sidered a definite Valley Forge starter. The congestion caused in the short run to the first turn in former seasons when the Valley Forge was run at a flat mile brought many unfavorable comments. Due to this fact, general manager and executive vice-president Walter H. Donovan has set the distance for this tenth running at a distance of a mile and 70 yards, Racing secretary and handicapper M. C. "Ty" Shea this morning released his s weights with the comment that he antici-t. patse at least a dozen starters and, possibly y more, which may make this the richest edition in the stake history. Post Card Has 116 Cochise and Ferd will be asked to concede ! five pounds to their closest rival, Yolo Stall bles Great Circle. The last named carried d a similar 119 pounds when he finished just it short of four lengths behind this pair while placing fourth in the Grey Lag. in which Cochise and Ferd each shouldered 122 2 pounds. . Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Post Card is 1 next in line with 116 pounds, followed by the Brookmeade Stable duo of Dart By and Why Not Now, and James Cox Bradys Casemate, all with 115 pounds. At the . bottom of the scale is Maine Chance Farms three-year-old Colony Date, with a fea-ls " thery 102 pounds. Ferd gained one of the most convincing triumphs of his career at this course as a sophomore last year when he won the mile and a quarter Jersey Stakes in a driving T finish over Brandywine Stables Greek Song after being practically left at the gate. It is reported that Ferd may have been a trifle short when nosed out by Lotowhite in the one mile and a sixteenth Excelsior Handicap, but he was also spotting that t one seven pounds. No excuse is needed for his defeat in the Grey Lag, in which he 1 gave a rousingly game effort to fight it out to the very end after setting all of the pace for the nine furlongs. Although Cochise and Great Circle are very doubtful for the starting line-up, Ferd d is certain to have his work cut out. Post ,t Card, who like Ferd first gained real prom-Dn ," inence as a three-year-old by a stake vic-,ir " tory at this track, is fresh from a triumph, a two-length victory over County Delight in the Maryland Handicap at Laurel. Dart i By, who is expected to carry Mrs. Dodge rg Sloanes Brookmeade standard in the Val-at ■ _ ley Forge, has not been racing up to par, but could as in former seasons, show im-j proved form over the Garden State strip. Others expected to start on Saturday and, who may have a say in the outcome, g are Halter, Kinsman, Istan, Sun Bahram, ., Whiffenproof , Danger Ahead, Risk A Whirl, Passemson and Thelma Berger.
