Baluster Handy Victor at Churchill * Even Money Choice Defeats Romanda Hanger Homebred Repeats Recent Keeneland Tally; Cheshire Cat Graduates By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., April 30. — Baluster, a homebred gelded son of Revoked and Jims Niece, carried W. Arnold Hangers colors to an impressive . and handy victory here this afternoon in the Misstep Purse. Responding to a clever ride from Douglas Dodson, the winner sped to the end of the six furlongs feature with a four and one-half lenghts advantage over his nearest rival, Mrs. H. J. Damms Romanda. Charlton Clays Lyceum finished third in the dash while Woodvale Farms Sister Louise ran fourth in the small starting band of a half-dozen three-year-olds. Baluster, who won his previous start at Keeneland, also chalked up his fourth triumph of the 1951 campaign, completing his trip over the fast footing in 1:11%. One of several favorites to visit the winners ring this delightful day. Baluster was held at even money. Barter Reuben White sent the Misstep field away from the gate in a "line" break, Baluster showing in front momentarily after reaching full stride. Sister Louise | moved up fast after the break and, joining Baluster, the pair then dominated the running to the stretch while Lyceum was a determined and even-going third. Romanda also raced within striking distance of the leaders and did not begin her final challenge until reaching the bend into the home lane. Widens Margin on Rivals Through the stretch, Baluster drew clear from Sister Louise and steadily widened the margin over his rivals during the run to the wire. Romanda closed well enough to get place honors and, although unable to seriously menace the flying victor, she was not under strong pressure to achieve place honors, finishing slightly less than two i lengths before Lyceum. Sister Louise, weary j from her display of early foot, was a faltering fourth with Sale Price and Mendy fol-; lowing her to the final marker in that i order. Continued fair weather and a lightning . fast track made for a most pleasant after-t noon to go racing and a crowd of approxi-1 mately 7,000 spectators witnessed the sport, j which was quite formful. i Charles T. Fishers Dixiana silks were . carried successfully by the homebred Cheshire Cat in the six furlongs Fair Play . Purse. Well placed from the start of the i sprint under the capable guidance of squat e Johnny Adams, the Dixiana filly raced 3 gamely enough to take a half-length deci-. sion from Cornelius V. Whitneys well-r regarded Arabia. Louis J. Hollenbach, Sr.s, Poinsette, who was much used racing f Bourbon Blaze into defeat before reaching - the stretch, lasted for third but she was e beaten off some six lengths by the Whitney i miss. Reverie Knoll Farms Pharos i Brother salvaged fourth money in the field r of a dozen sophomores. Cheshire Cat was the 11 to 10 choice in the totalisator and she stepped along in e l:ll4/5 to garner her initial victory.
