I [ r 1 I 7 Groom, Irish All-American Center, Signs With Cards Jerry Groom, Notre Dames AU-American center of last season, yesterday signed a contract to play for the National Football League Cardi- nals. Ray Bennigsen, Cardinals president, revealed that head coach Curly Lam- beau met with Groom Saturday and after some discussion both parties reached a mutual agreement. Lam-beau journeyed to the Notre Dame campus to watch Groom and the Irish Old Timers go down to defeat at the hands of next seasons variety squad, 47 to 20. Groom was the Cards first choice at the annual NFL draft last January, but at the time expressed his intention of joining the Air Force after graduation. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, the 21-year-old Groom captained the Irish last fall and played both offense and defense, often going the full 60 min- utes. He stands six feet, three inches in height and weighs 235 pounds.
