South Dakota to Return To Racing at Age of 11 11Old Old Ohio Favorite on Sidelines For Over One Year Since Injury InjuryRIVER RIVER DOWNS California Ohio June 10 South Dakota magic name of Ohio racing who electrified Cincinnati racing fans in 1950 with successive wins in the River Downs Championship Cincinnati Classic and Marathon at distances from a mile and a sixteenth to two miles will be returned to this track tomorrow to begin preparation for another crack at the big three of Ohio racing owner Al Smitha has revealed The older halfbrother to Cochise from the Greentree mare New Pin has been turned out for over a year since being injured in a training mishap at this same course courseI I let him graze all last year but he looked brokenhearted when the racers started training this spring arid he was left out said Smitha so I shipped him to a friend who legs up harness horses and he hooked old Dakota to a sulky He pulled that thing so fast that the driver could smell the rubber burning I sure did get him ready though thoughNow Now 11 years of age South Dakota be ¬ came almost legendary by his feats in 1950 while raising havoc with stakes horses sent into Ohio for River Downs stakes racing Like the hometown boy who makes good the Omaha gelding became the champion of the local folks and even Kentuckians from across the river reckoned their cham ¬ pion to some of the greats that had raced around Latonia Though Smitha may be optimistic in his stakes plans for South Dakota his very presence at River Downs will thrill the many fans who remember his prowess here three years ago agoDuring During his early years in Ohio South Dakota was a frequent holder of track records and his performance on August 8 1945 when he ran a mile and seventy yards in 140 over the River Downs track still remains an American and world rec ¬ ord The Smitha gelding was a frequent winner of Fair Grounds stakes during his career and made occasional forays into Chicago to add to the prestige of Ohio racing His return will be like meeting an old friend on the street
