Belmont Probables Narrow to Four DcmcerJamie K Duel is In Offing OffingRoyal Royal Bay Gem Considered Third Solid Horse With Kamehameha the Outsider Outsideri i By BOB HORWOOD HORWOODStaff Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y June 10 The field for Saturdays eighty fifth running of the 100000 Belmont Stakes has narrowed down to the original three solid horses and one dark horse Alfred G Vanderbilts Native Dancer Spring Hill Farms Jamie K and Eugene Constantin Jrs Royal Bay Gem will al ¬ most certainly be favored in that order in this classic mile and onehalf while King Ranchs Kamehameha is the outsider ex ¬ pected to join them in the post parade lor this third tier of the Triple Crown CrownBrookfield Brookfield Farm Stables Isasmoothie followed Saxon Stables Invigorator who narrowly defeated him in the Peter Pan Handicap to Delaware Park where they are scheduled to meet again in the Kent Stakes on Saturday Greentree Stables Powhatan is not believed by John Gaver to be up to carrying the 126 pounds re ¬ quired in the Belmont and is starting in a handicap under 112 tomorrow The only other candidate regarded as a possible starter this week is Ogden Phipps Bassanio and he is only a remote possibility possibilityFavorite Favorite Never Looked Better BetterNative Native Dancer never looked better than he does right now and will probably be favored at about 2 to 5 to repeat his Preak ness victory over Jamie K though the margin at the finish of that Pimlico classic was an uncomfortably close long neck Royal Bay Gem was cooked by Jamie K at the fivefurlong pole in the Preakness and lost ground in the stretch which is not encouraging to those who believe he will benefit by the Belmont distance but followed his Maryland defeat with a vic ¬ tory in the Peabody Memorial at the Lin ¬ coln Fields meeting at Hawthorne He has worked a respectable six furlongs since re ¬ turning here from Chicago ChicagoDespite Despite the small field in prospect this edition of the Belmont promises to be a thriller The narrow defeat of Native Dancer by Dark Star in the Kentucky Derby and his comparatively narrow vic ¬ tory over Jamie K in the Preakness add much interest to the gray champions ap ¬ pearance in the Belmont A decisive vic ¬ tory would do much to restore the aura of invincibility the Vanderbilt colt wore with distinction until the afternoon of May 2 and which most observers believe he only discarded momentarily However Jamie K gained many adherents by his fine run from the fivefurlong pole to the sixteenth pole in the Pimlico event and gained a few more admirers by his brilliant effort in an unsuitable sprint here on Saturday in which he was narrowly beaten by the older Safety in racehorse time A second meet ¬ ing between these colts should answer many burning questions
