By MOKRIE KURLANSKY Shorty de Ponti Local Trot Champion Has WoruSix Out of Eight 53 Starts Worsham Beds Down Nellie Pointer PointerMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywobd HI June 10 Monday nights freeforall trot clearly established Shorty DePontis claim to the Maywood Park trot ¬ ting championship The four year old colt owned in Minneapolis Minn and trained by Clarence Curtis lowered his record again in his latest essay by four fifths of a second to 206Vs It was the sixth victory in eight starts this year for the son of Tecumseh Hanover Getting to the top early Shorty DePonti held a comfort ¬ able lead all the way to help his driver round out a double victory that night Curtis had won the nights opener with Francis Me and after Shorty DePonti re ¬ turned a winner too C C climbed back into second place behind the tied leaders Ralph Ayou and Earl Roush both having 16 victories and Curtis 15 wins winsThere There have been some cases where drivers accepting a socalled catch mount did not receive adequate pay ment or no compensation at all This reminds of one case last year when the ownertrainer of a onehorse stable of ¬ fered a wellknown young driver the ride behind his pacer in the 25000 Pacing Derby The young man won both heats of this richest race of the 1952 Chicago harness racing season but received only a paltry remuneration for his outstand ¬ ing effort which was to a great extent responsible for the horses success Later the same driver flew twice over to De ¬ troit to drive said pacer in some stakes in the Motor City but still hasnt got his expenses paid by the owner of the horse There are no official rules regu ¬ lating the compensation of a driver of catch mounts but the official agencies might well consider to incorporate defi ¬ nite regulations pertaining to the com ¬ pensation of a driver accepting an out ¬ side or freelance mount For the pro ¬ tection of trainers and drivers it just shouldnt happen again that the win ¬ ning driver of a race like the 50000 Golden West Pace at Los Angeles Calif receives only 500 and the man hi the sulky behind the winner of the 25000 National Facing Derby at Roosevelt Raceway a few seasons ago gets a check for 200 which was 100 less than the stipulated 300 300The The fastest halfmile of the 1953 Chicago season was registered in Monday nights ninth race a class A pace The pole horse Ima Hanover Dale with Dave Taddeo in the sulky left the gate like a bullet to be joined in the first turn by Hollywood Ben nie and the Floyd Rosencrantsdriven pacer reached the quarter pole in 29 But then Peter Belle was moving up got the lead and cutting out a furious clip was timed in 100 for the first lap It was plain for everybody to see that the leaders could not maintain such a fast pace for the second half and sure enough two horses that had been rated off the pace got the laurels in that heat The winner was Huron Express the Canadian speed ¬ ster and runnerup was Peggy Barnes whose strength had been conserved by Ralph Ayou by clinging to the rail Huron Express effort was especially commend ¬ able since the nineyearold had to race on the outside the whole mile The victors time was 205 a personal record for the iron gelding geldingVern geldingf f Vern Waddell closed out his Maywood Park campaign with his winning drive be ¬ hind Huron Express Altogether the Ca ¬ nadian won seven races three with the royallybred Mighty Cox two with Allan Scott and two with Huron Express while his only other starter Hollywood Direct got part of the purses raced for The Ca ¬ nadian stable left for the Dominions most modern harness race track Thorncliffe Raceway in Toronto and a side trip to Saratoga Raceway in upstate New York also is contemplated Waddell might re ¬ turn in the fall since he has his twoyear old Algiers ju ¬ veniles Jake Mahoney had a slight training acci ¬ dent the other morning He was jogging a green trotter on the track and was about to turn him around when the sprinkling truck came along The
