Current FillyMare Races Recall Kincsems Feats FeatsHungarian Hungarian Miss Won All of Her 54 Starts to Set New Record RecordOCEANPORT OCEANPORT N J June 10 Monmouth Parks richest race the 50000 Monmouth Oaks will focus attention anew upon thjeeyearold fillies The mile and an eighth event sriarply increased to its pres ¬ ent value from last seasons 20000 prom ¬ ises to be a magnet for the very best of the age and sex when it goes to the post next August 8 It has been only in com ¬ paratively recent years that fillies and mares have come into their own on Ameri ¬ can race courses and through the magic of the winners circle providing top blood ¬ stock for breeding farms from coast to coast coastIt It is interesting to contemplate some of the great fillies of the past and to analyze their chances against horses of today One such oldtimer was Kincsem winner of 54 races in 54 starts a record destined to stand for many generations to come comeThe The tale of Kincsem brushes aside the years to 1876 when 50 thoroughbreds roamed the ancestral grounds of a certain Hungarian nobleman Among them was an ungainly filly disregarded in the tempest over the more stately beauties about her and who was named Kincsem Then one morning Kincsem turned up missing missingThe The local gendarmes located the filly in the camp of wandering gypsy tribe One aged gypsy was arrested and returned to stand trial for theft Before sentence was passed the nobleman approached the old man and asked Why if you wanted to steal only one horse did you pick out Kincsem KincsemKincsem Kincsem had a large head a potbelly thin legs and a long neck and looked any ¬ thing but prepossessing The gypsy shook his head Your other horses may be bet ¬ ter looking he said but the filly will be best Shell be a champion championKincsem Kincsem meaning My Treasure in Hungarian was well named For season after season she ran against the best horses of Europe and never lost a race Away from the fire of competition she looked anything but the champion she proved to be In post parade she seemed lazy Her head would hang her eyes would half shut MoSt of the time she was sound asleep in her stall stallAt At the start of a race Jiowever she be came electrified Once she heard the throb of horses hoofs she was off and away dis ¬ tancing the best of her era Horsemen re ¬ fused to believe their eyes They could not understand how so raggedy a filly could run so fast but as race after race fell to her flying legs they finally grudingly con ¬ ceded no greater mare ever had lived Kincsem the ultimate winner of 54 straight races died at the age of 17 and Hungarian newspapers of the day edged their editions in black so highly was she prized It was a tribute never equalled by a thoroughbred Other fine fillies are now awaiting the 1953 running of the Monmouth Oaks at Mon ¬ mouth Park and while none will equal Kincsems record the purse money for which they are racing is higher than any purse for which Knicsem ever ranvictory in s uch a race will make the winner a promising prospect for future broodmare brilliance
