Lincoln Fields Notebook By J J MURPHY Miss America First Filly Stake Commodore M Named for Markey Trench StoryWhere Is Vascof VascofHAWTHORNE HAWTHORNE Cicero HI June 10 The Miss America Stakes to be featured here Saturday is the first added money race of the Chicago season for twoyear old fillies exclusively It will be followed in its category by the Pollyanna Stakes the Arlington Lassie Stakes at Arlington Park and the Mademoiselle and Princess Pat Stakes at Washington Park Princess Lygia who is currently performing at this meeting won the Miss America and went on to take the Polly ¬ anna and the Arlington Lassie Those three successes resulted in her being sold to Louis B Mayer for a reported 100000 sum She then failed in the Princess Pat being beaten by A Gleam Last season Biddy Jane took the Miss America and finished second to Fulvous in the Princess Pat This sea ¬ son will mark the first running of the Mademoiselle This will be the sixth run ¬ ning of the Miss America which was first decided in 1948 with Miss Sal K ridden by George South the winner Willie Garner who like South has retired from the sad ¬ dle steered Miss Stephanie to success the following year and then Ken Church took it with Juliets Nurse and Princess Lygia Lois Cook rode Biddy Jane last season seasonAlthough Although it is rather early in the sea ¬ son to gauge the ability of this years filly crop in order to compare them with the previous winners it is unlikely that any are as good as was Princess Lygia especially at the fivefurlong distance The Princess is one of the fastest short distance runners of her sex to appear in this area in some time However a num ¬ ber of those in this seasons lot have shown signs of promise Golly a filly who was a steal at last years Keene land sales for 900 has already proven her worth in winning the 10000 Debu ¬ tante Stakes at Churchill Downs In this she defeated Beanir and other good ones Queen Hopeful a 5800 purchase Re ¬ splendent who cost 5200 and Lady Elliott and who was bought for 3800 each won at the very first asking which was at this meeting Sherry Jen is a stakes winner Jay Jay Gee an Illinois bred has triumphed several times in succession and Sam E Wilson Jr thought so much of Arabian Queen as a yearling that he forked over 14500 for her herEaster Easter Airline the horse of many owners has departed for River Downs The gelding was purchased by E Loux and Charles Ghere from J J Gregory Easter Airline failed to win for any one of four different owners here Loux and Ghere also bought Cockof the walk from Gregory Trainer Milton Reiser has received the twoyear old filly Cindy EmileoJ W Choisser trainer for exgovernor John Stelle has shipped Busy and Busy April to Fair mount Park M J Skaggs has taken over the training of the horses of E P Metz and H J Seppenfield He replaces Daye Womel dorff Pretty Cindy and Locarno owned by the Broadway Stable have returned from Fairmount Park Dr Harry A Burns who has some horses racing on the Ohio circuit has been visiting with Harry Trotsek Mi and Mrs George Carmichael of Indianapolis came in for a few days of the sport One of the best of the Calumet twoyearolds readying up for racing at Arlington Park is Commodore M named for Gene Markey whose wife is owner of the stable Incidentally Mr Markey who is quite a writer has a western best seller in the book shops Its title is Kingdom of the Spur SpurWe We are to have a new announcer at Arlington Park this season His name is expected to be made public in a few days Raymond Haight who performed the duties for the past two years is now en ¬ gaged in the East They might do worse than engage Rays father Walter who is an old Daily Racing Form chart caller Placing judge Vasco Parke one of the noted Parke family of jockeys did a little horsebacking himself in his younger days in his home state of Idaho His rival jockeys were mostly Indians and Vasco was winning so many races they ganged up on him Dug and finally located him sleeping peacefully in the trench trenchWhen When the 10yearold Money finished last here Tuesday it was the first time the veteran had been unplaced in almost three years Last time he was out of the money was September 9 1950 Of course he had only started four times in that period win ¬ ning three races and being second once The old guy ran for a 2500 claiming price three years ago His price is now 3500 Money is by Invermark out of Brilliant State by Brilliant The latter while not a top horse was a good producer of mud runners and Money has started on nothing but a fast track since his last un ¬ placed effort Invermark now deadwas a son of Teddy Understand that Doug Dodson is not definitely set for his mount in the Miss America Stakes after all
