Connors Corner By CHUCK CONNORS Check Word on Fastest Juvenile Max Hirsch Admits Tale Is True Colt Is To Markets Young Brother BrotherBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y June 10 The paddock gang the members in good standing that is was shoved around this morning and their tempers were not as calm as usual The rea ¬ son for the migrations here and there was the numerous arrivals to attend the sale of horses in training that was staged out back of the clubhouse parking lot However the boys found what in their opinion was a nice quiet place and opened their discussions which bore on the im ¬ pending Belmont Stakes to be contested on Saturday The principal agenda of the meeting was the early pace in the race or the lack of same depending on riding in ¬ structions The quintet that loom up as starters in the event are Native Dancer Jamie K Royal Bay Gem Powhatan and Kamehameha They according to those astute racing oracles were never known for blazing speed but better described as capable of coming off a fast early pace The question was kicked around for a few minutes and finally the boys were startled by a suggestion pointed out that if the race was run next year Max Hirsch would have a colt in that race that just could run right out of this world Why he is so fast that Hirsch decided against training him as a twoyearold he continued continuedThat That piece of information broke up the meeting and left the boys wondering if their collective senses were being insult ¬ ed Some of the boys drifted over to the salesringr who knows what can happen with so many strangers in town while the others went in search of coffe and past performances Your corespondent however went hi search of Max Hirsch for confirmation or rebuttal Hirsch was busy directing the exercise boys who were mounted on the final set of the morning a band of twoyearolds Hirsch watched the sextet start towards the track and then trailed along in pursuit for a first hand observation of their efforts effortsThe The question relative to the colt who could run right out of this world was tossed at him and for the moment he appeared stunned A grin worked around the corners of his lips and he admitted that the tale was true and that the colt was a young brother to To Market This fellow the twoyearold I mean to my knowledge has not been named is the fastest horse who ever stood on irons and I mean that That was a lengthy statement for the usual taciturn Texan when it comes to discussing twoyearolds Yes the colt was broken last fall he continued wintering at Co ¬ lumbia S C and during the early spring was undergoing training One day I sent him over to the starting gate and with the boy swinging against him the youngster stepped off the first quarter mile in 22 seconds the three furlongs in 33 and the halfmile with his head turned sideways in 45 seconds secondsIt It was hard to believe my watch However a couple of days later I tried him again in front of a lot of visitors go ask Mr Loew the man who has Case Goods he was there The colt repeated the performance that morning and then and there I decided io call Mr Sam Ma ¬ son he owns him and turned him out for a long time and let him grow and develop Next week or in a couple of weeks anyway I will bring him back from Kentucky hes on the farm out there and then play around with him until the fall Will I start him Well thats one question I cant answer right now but the threeyearold races are okay aint they To Market his older brother is one of the fastest horses in training big and well put together The two
