BETWEEN RACES By OSCAR OTIS HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 10 At long last the California sales market seems to be jelling into a standard pattern and with the single exception of the Del Mar sales the FasigTipton Company has taken over the entire state in co ¬ operation with the California Thor ¬ oughbred Breeders Association The FasigTipton success with the Frankel dispersal plus other assorted stock at the Pomona Fair Grounds last winter was the convincer for the breeders that perhaps sales growth and prestige in California would come only if a professional company like FasigTipton handled the details and staged the sales in a professional manner So a deal has been concluded whereby the breeders will share in any profits from general dispersals conducted in this state by FasigTipton and in turn have turned over the annual yearling sales to Humphrey Finney and his asso ¬ ciates The final four days of Hollywood Park will see a concentration of sales activity which will command na ¬ tional attention On Tuesday and Wednesday night July 21 and 22 the annual breeders sale of selected yearlings will transpire with sales offering limited to 91 youngsters the smallest number offered in recent years This of course reflects more intensive culling on the part of Col Fred W Koester the judge of conformation and the pedigree committee On Thursday night FasigTipton will stagea sale of miscellany stock including the com ¬ plete dispersal of the horse of La Jolla Farms Then on Friday the day before Del Mar opens all horses at the Binglin Farm at Moorpark will go under the hammer the Binglin sale being necessitated to settle the estate of the late Dixie Lee Crosby Bing and his wife owned half of Binglin We understand however that Lin Howard is not retiring from drawbacks of this area is that you always are a great distance away from where you want to go It seems to us that one fault of the summer yearling sales in previous years was its location Santa Anita which is a long way from the scene of summertime turf activitiy so FasigTiptons first decree was to bring the horses to the customers so to speak and to that end arranged to hold the sale at Hollywood Park General manager Jim Stew ¬ art and the horsemen showed the utmost cooperation by making stalls available the week before the sale for dis ¬ play purposes Normally more than 100 horses leave the grounds a week or so prior to the closing day and these vacant stalls will be made available to the yearlings However the vacancies do not occur all in one area so horsemen have agreed to move from one section of the barn area upon request thus making a single enclosure available to the yearlings and the public California long has been known as one of the best markets in the world for a made horse one of the poorest for a yearling How ¬ ever this is slowly changing and for the better No less than 30 farms have consigned to the yearling sales but with only three exceptions the number in each consignment is comparatively small The three large of ¬ ferings are those of Dr Chester L Wilson of San Ysidrp the La Jolla Farms of Bill Black and the La Jolla Farms acting as agent for Zack T Addington and the estate of Joe Palmisano Wilson will sell nine colts and fillies by Dogaway the AddingtonPalmisano group has five by Cover Up and one by Quarter Pole while La Jolla will offer four by Cover Up plus yearlings by Khaled Domin ¬ go and Russia n And among the more notable consignors are Walter G McCarty Amarillo Ranch of Mr and Mrs John D Hertz Old English Rancho of Ellwood B John ¬ ston and Ted Tepper Dr Frank Porter Miller president of the California Breeders Association Clifford Mooers Caroline Gaffers David J Davis Harry N Isenberg Dorothy P Barrett and Rancho Felicia of Mr Solidarity be ¬ ing among those catalogued cataloguedA A A A AAs As a prelude to the sales the breeders will offer an ¬ other forum series which proved so popular last year but which like the sales will be held in Inglewood instead of crosstown This will enable breeders and others inter ¬ ested in the lectures to enjoy the races of an afternoon specifically July 13 14 and 15 attend the lectures at night It is one of the more unfortunate aspects of Cali ¬ fornia breeding that the industry is strung out for about 1000 miles the length of the state and breeders seldom get together in groups to talk over mutual problems Dr Miller tells us he hopes the magnet of the forum followed by the yearling sales and coupled with the excitement of big stakes days at Hollywood Park will serve to get a majority of the breeders together for a period of several days and thus accomplish a great deal of good through the interchange of ideas through the everprevalent shop Dr Miller has been a busy man oughbreds this spring and in addition he has been judging innumerable dog shows from coast to coast He currently is en route to Chicago to judge a show there but upon his return he will devote his entire time to building breeders week into something at once spectacular and worthwhile Among the speakers already signed are professor C E Howell Univer ¬ sity of California at Davis on the subject of animal nutrition Dr E E Nottran of San Francisco on teeth Col John H Kitt ner of the Grayson Foundation University of Maryland on equine influenza Dr F E Hall of the Kentucky Agricultural Ex ¬ perimental Station Lexington on virus abortion and one or two others including the practical horseman and writer Al Gomez The forum idea was first tried at Lexington and proved such a success that California followed suit last year and then Jersey adopted the idea Both Jersey and California make an effort to bring the lectures to the people concerned and it has worked out rather well The Jersey series is roving from one end of the state almost to the other Newark to Camden but the California series is centered at the scene of the racing activity Dr Miller incidentally predicts a firm price for year ¬ lings this year and perhaps he is right It might be added that in the past the Cali ¬ fornia sales percentagewise have just about predicted the things to expect at both Keeneland and Saratoga and for that reason have attained national significance Indeed if one takes the trouble to make a rough estimate of improvement in cata ¬ loguing ie the improvement of credentials of the yearlings offered here the Califor ¬ nia sales have proven an amazingly accur ¬ ate barometer of the strength of the na ¬ tional yearling market
