He is a partner in many enterprises with his close friend, Sid Richardson. Cain is president of the Delhi Oil Company. Murchison and Cain teamed up three years ago to buy some cheap horses, racing them in California under "Murcain Stable." Once they felt they understood the way a stable operated, they decided to expand, and made their first purchases of Blue Ruler, Jeans Joe, and others, as yearlings, from their friend Gordon Guiberson of Dallas and La Jolla, Calif. Interest in Boys, Inc. - ,On the turf, Murchison also is well known for his purchase of the Del Mar racetrack for the interest of Boys, Incorporated. Del Mar gave a check for 5,000 to boys projects in Southern California, the first charity dividend from the operation. Boys, Inc., also has been dealing for the MRA track in Detroit. Murchison started life in Texas as a "poor boy." He made his first stake during the depression in oil leases, and many which he was fortunate enough to retain for himself brought in gushers. Using the oil as a base, he has expanded into many other fields, including magazine publishing, book publishing text books, insurance, banking, pipe line construction, hotels,, restaurants, sub-division construction. A year ago, Fortune magazine outlined a list of his business holdings which he either owned in entirety or had working control, added up the assets at just over six hundred million dollars. Murchison spends about half the year in Dallas. The rest of the time he travels about the country, or vacations at his "island in Mexico" where he and Richardson own a large estate which is accessible from the United States only by air. He spent last summer at the Del Mar racetrack, and in the last few years, has become a Kentucky Derby regular. He thoroughly enjoys racing, and devotes as much time to it as he can.
