Nine Slated to Match Strides In Sportsmans Park Handicap [ i i 1 , i . l 1 [ Timely Tip Looms Pre-Race t Choice Over Bishop Tandem In Mile and Sixteenth Test By J. J. MURPHY SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 6. — The Sportsmans Park Handicap, first of two 0,000 events on the National Jockey -Clubs agenda, features Saturdays nine-race program at Sportsmans Park. Post time for the first race will be 1 : 45 p. m. In the one mile and a sixteenth feature, nine horses will parade postward, including the two-horse entry of William H. Bishops Equal Strife and Char a. The probable pre-post favorite to win the event is A. L. Birchs Timely Tip, 1954 winner of the Arkansas Derby who will be making his initial start at the popular Cicero half-miler. Timely Tip campaigned at Hot Springs this past winter and stopped at Keenelands recent meeting. The four-year-old colt won three races at Oaklawn Park, his most recent being on March 26 when he beat such good horses as War King, Sir Tribal and Cross Ring. He will have his regular rider, jockey Paul A. Ward, aboard. The second choice in the field will most likely be Bishops two-fold threat of Equal Strife and Chara. Ralph Borgemenke, a new arrival in the jockey quarters and who is doing the riding for the Anna, HI., owner, "will be up on one of the entries. Deb Chaser Inaugural Winner Two handicap winners at the current meeting, Armer and Nails Deb Chaser, and Marion H. VanBergs Knights Reward, are also in the race. Deb Chaser, winner of the Inaugural Handicap on opening day by four lengths over Heredity in the first division of the split headliner. Since then, Deb Chaser was among the "also rans" in the Spring Handicap" last Saturday. Incidentally, the Spring Cap was won by Knights Reward. Deb Chaser, however, has been given the top impost of 118 pounds against 115 for Knights Reward. In his- losing effort last Saturday, Deb Chaser carried 121 against 113 for Knights Reward. This means that the, latter is picking up two pounds and Deb Chaser is taking on three pounds. Jockey Ronnie Baldwin, who is leading the other riders in the matter of victories, will ride Knights Reward. The Bishop stars, Chara and Equal Strife, have started at the meeting, Chara winning the En-; durance Handicap No. 2 last Wednesday when the little filly took the lead in the one mile and one-eighth race and was never headed. Equal Strifes latest effort was in the Spring Handicap in which he run third behind Knights Reward and Golden Admiral. Others going to the post in the feature are Clover Leaf Farms King, last years winner of the Illinois Owners Handicap at Hawthorne; Bryan H. Wises Mr. Dink, un- placed at the meeting, but a winner on closing day at Oaklawn Park; Mrs. Russell L. Reinemans Alternative, second to Sir Tribal in the Flying Comet Purse on April 27, and Valley View Farms Idle Platter, who finished second to Nickies Boy in the LaGrange Purse on Thursday.
