Lucky in More Ways Than One CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 6. — One .of the luckiest horses ever to win tfie Derby was Jet Pilot, who sped to a stout victory in 1947, and while he wasn!t exactly lucky to win he was accounted/indeed fortunate to even be in the race. For, when Jet Pilot was two, he was shipped to Louisville along with War Fan, and by shipping, escaped a stable fire in Chicago which wiped out most of the Maine Chance Farm horses. Jet Pilot started on -Derby Day, 1946, as a two-year-old, and won. He came back a year later to win the big one as a three-year-old. Like most other Derby winners, he later entered the ranks of sires, and is now a popular stallion at Spendthrift.
