Gentry took over the powerful Cain Hoy outfit last December. He is a turfman of whom it may correctly be said that he literally "grew up" on the racetrack, for this is literally true. Son of the late Loyd Gentry, he has been around horses ever since he was able to walk. He has been a trainer in his own right for the last nine years, with perhaps his best known horse having been Shag Tails, third in the Derby Trial to Hill Gail. At one time he also trained Checkerhall. Native of Lexington Born in Lexington, Gentrys activity with thoroughbreds was interrupted only once, ie., the three years he was on acive duty with Coast Guard. He saw service in, Iceland and Greenland. Gentry is a third generation horseman .for his grandfather, of Greenville, Texas, raced horses many years ago m the Texas and Oklahoma bushes. His father, Loyd Gentry, Sr., once rode for the horses owned and trained by his grandfather.
