Derby Horses Welfare Always of First Concern — Are Under Special Police Guard 24 Hours Daily at Churchill CHURCHILL DOWNS* Louisville, Ky., May 6. — Nothing is taken for granted in-, sofar as protection for Saturdays Kentucky Derby candidates is concerned. Every possible precaution is taken to insure their welfare during their stay at Churchill Downs. , Special police guard the barn which houses a Derby candidate from the moment he is unloaded at the track. They maintain 24-hour a day vigilance to make sure that nothing happens to the contestants whose value can hardly be- estimated, in dollars, and cents. * In addition to the police detail assigned the barns, there is, of course, the regular watchmen whom the stables themselves employ and who are on duty around the clock as well. Proper policing of the stable is paramount in that the Downs management permits early Derby visitors to inspect the stabling area. These extraordinary precautions not only keep undesirables away, but also protect the visitors as well. The possibility of the fire hazard also is reduced with proper patrolling of the stable area.
