OUTSIDERS IN LIMELIGHT Mac Maxim Furnishes Biggest Upset at Fairmount Park. * . Botch Also Surprises by Victory Over Grass Maid and Battle Field in Fifth Race — Large Crowd Attends. ♦ COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 29.— Platers and maidens again had a full measure of opportunity at purse earning at the Fairmount Park track, for the program of seven races was fashioned with a view to giving them a chance. The racing, however, did not suffer from a spectacular point, for the finishes, in most instances, were close enough to suit the most exacting. Because of the mediocre card there was a falling off in the wagering, but the overthrow of many favorites caused long prices to rule against most of the winners. Mac Maxim, carrying the colors of H. G. Bedwell, was the most conspicuous winner at long odds during the afternoon. The mile and an eighth race, which brought out a band of distance performers, resulted in an upset by the failure of Battle Field and Grass Maid, which absorbed more attention than did Botch. The latter was the victor, but his success was in the main due to the incompetency of McClair on Battle Field, J. Ford outriding and outfinishing him. Grass Maid finished in fourth place, being led home by Realty, which had served as pacemaker most of the distance. Mac Maxims success was also the result of incompetency on the part of the rider having the mount on the contender. In this case it was Southern Kiss that was the victim. Southern Kiss was probably pounds the best, but McTague was unequal to the task. He was well in the lead when he took back for no apparent reason. Post Mistress, the favorite, finished in third place. Cloudy weather, with an occasional shower, was the rule, but it did not prevent a big crowd being on hand. Timidity on the past of J. Berry deprived J. C. Milam of the purse in the opening dash, that racer being beaten by a slight margin by Robina Seth. The latter raced on even terms with The Doctor in the first half mile before gaining a slight margin, which was increased when Berry began taking The Doctor back, relinquishing his inner rail position. The Doctor came with a great rush and display of speed in the stretch and just failed in wearing down Robina Seth. Georgia Herget finished in third place. Another maiden race that followed at three-quarters mile went to Laudation, an outsider, which beat home the Le Mar Stock Farm representative Many Thorns, the favorite. This pair raced in the van of the field from the start. Laudation slipping through next the inner rail to head Many Thorns in the first quarter. Billy Doran finished third. . , — « —
