EDISTO REDEEMS HIMSELF Atones for Defeat in Toronto Cup by Winning King Edward Cup Likewise Establishes ficvr Track Record Lieutenant Seas Victor in Lion Heart HeartSteeplechase Steeplechase in Close Finish TORONTO Ont May 27 Edisto made amends for his defeat in the Toronto Cup on Monday last when he came back this afternoon and beat Joy Smoke in the King Edward Gold Cup a dash of a mile and a sixteenth to which 5000 was added by the Ontario Jockey Club Edisto carried 122 pounds set his opponents a dazzling pace from the start stalled off a couple of determined challenges from Joy Smoke and won in clever fashion by a length Inci ¬ dentally Edisto hung up a new track record for the distance when he ran it in 1 44 44Joy Joy Smoke was picking up two pounds from his race the other day He started fast with the leaders and Butwcll sent him right after the flying Edisto which outran his rivals from the start and went into a three lengths lead on the back stretch Erickson apparently had the Seagram racer under restraint and when Joy Smoke moved up rounding the far turn Edisto had a bit in reserve At the eighth post in the home stretch Joy Smoke made one last de ¬ termined challenge and got within a length of Edisto The latter responded again and the finish found him going away Mothers Son was third beaten by two lengths for second place and then followed Wilderness The winners portion of the stake was o840 o840Millenium Millenium made most of the pace in the first for which she was an oddson favorite Romanelli had the mount and after begin ¬ ning in front took the filly in hand and rated off Fallen Leaf until rounding the far turn where she went to the front with a rush In the stretch run the winner was under a hard drive to stall off determined opposition from Point of Honor The latter began slowly and Claver went around on the outside of his field to get to the leaders Entering the home stretch he came through the middle of the bunch and at the finish was gradually wearing the leader down As it was he just failed to make it and was beaten by a head There was a wet spot right at the finishing line and when Point of Honor reached it he took a flying leap War Gold was third beaten a length for the place The Seagram racer Sarmatic after being outrun the first threeeighths closed with a rush and was going the fastest of them all allThe The Lion Heart Steeplechase a handicap over the twomile course furnished a stirring finish when Lieutenant Seas came from be ¬ hind to get up in the last few strides and beat the favorite Le Vignemale by a head Continued on the latter to drop out of it in the early stages and during the running made two or three moves When he finally went to the front he rushed Le Vignemale to the front with the result that when Lieutenant Seas made his bid the mare was exhausted Rocking Horse made the pace for a mile and a half and then tired badly Roi Craig un ¬ seated his rider at the fifth fence fenceCloth Cloth Hall under a good ride by J Maiben was an easy winner of the Mayflower Plate In the early running Maiben took Cloth Hall in hand and rated him back of the pacemaker until well around the far turn where he moved up on the outside At the eighth post he caught Seven Oaks and from there to the finish was drawing away until he had a two lengths advantage Seven Oaks after setting the pace tired in the stretch and barely lasted long enough to beat Solidity by a head for second place Hecate began slowly and was never a factor factorSchaefer Schaefer rode a well judged ride on Taud lane when he landed the latter winner in the Grosvenor Plate after a driving finish which lasted from the top of the home stretch to the finishing mark In the early stages Atlantida dashed to the front closely pursued by New Beauty Rounding the far turn the latter carried Atlantida off her feet and when she tired Gallant Greek joined issue with the pacemaker The pair raced into the home stretch heads apart In the mean ¬ time Schaefer was gradually closing on the leaders with Taudlanc and at the top of stretch he went to the outside and straight ¬ ened out for the final run went to a drive At the end Taudlane closed with splendid courage and getting up in the last sixteenth won going away at the end by half a length New Beauty was a head in front of Gallant Greek GreekThere There was a long delay at the post in the sixth race and the field was at the barrier seventeen minutes before they were finally sent away Fleetwood kicked jockey Mun that some bones had been broken Regal Toy was sent to the paddock but before another rider was substituted it was found that Munden suffered nothing worse than a bruised foot and he was again put on the horse When they were sent away Muskul longe began well and rounding the turn into the back stretch he went to the front and led until rounuing the far turn where Cave Woman caught and passed him Entering the home stretch it looked as if the mare would win but at the end both Cave Woman and Muskallonge tired and Fleetwood closing with a rush got up in the last sixteenth and won going away by three lengths Muskallonge proved gamer than Cave Wom ¬ an in the final drive and beat her out a head for second place placeIt It was a mighty tight fit between Row ¬ lands Request and Dr OMara in the closing event a nose separating the pair as they flashed past the judges In the early run ¬ ning Blue Hill went to the front and made the pace with Rowlands Request in close pursuit They ran in this order until straightened out in the home stretch where Blue Hill began to tire Rowlands Request took command inside the eighth post but at the end was under a furious drive to last long enough to stall off Dr OMara which finished strong on the outside At the head of the stretch Pixola came through next the rail and at the eighth post looked all over a winner His saddle slipped at this stage and Maiben pulled him up
