HOLUS PALIS TO VOLTAIC Accounts for Chief Offering at Belmont Thursday Cherry Tic Outstays Golden Spire anil Blind BlindPlay Play in Hcnipstcad Handicap HandicapAfter After Great Finish NEW YORK X YMay 27 Robert L Gerrys Voltaic a remarkable sort of a plater was winner of the chief offering at Belmont Park when he took down the Hollis Claiming Stakes at threequarters that was worth 3475 to the winner Applecross from the Sage Stable finished a fast going second and the Sagamore Stables Montfcrrat beat the unfortunate Roland for third thirdIt It was another unreasonably cold day at the big course but a good crowd was out and there was no lack of enthusiasm A cold wind blew over the track adding to general discomfort and while it aided the runners over the Widener Course and down the back stretch of the main course it blew in the faces of the horses through the front stretch stretchAnaconda Anaconda occasioned some delay at the post in the Hollis by reason of his unruly action but the start was a good one though Roland was sharply knocked out of the running before getting under way and he had no racing chance Thurber hustled Vol ¬ taic into command and Applecross and Federal went along in close attendance This order was pretty well maintained to the head of the stretch where Federal had enough and dropped back badly There Voltaic drew out slightly but in the final eighth Applecross closed with a determined courage that made Thurber hustle the Gerry gelding along to make the score certain certainThe The race run by Roland suggested that only his misfortune at the start had kept him from earning a part of the stake Mont ferrat was third but Roland had closed a big gap and was catching him at every stride strideThe The Hempstead Handicap at one mile had really more interest than the Hollis It resulted in a great finish when old Cherry Pie from the Greentree Stable just lasted to score from the fast finishing Golden Spire from Bob Smiths Sunnyland Stable and the Log Cabin Stud Stables Blind Play was third thirdGamble Gamble and Blind Play were the ones to cut out the running while Cherry Pie raced strongly with Chilhowee back of them and both Golden Spire and Spot Cash were far back in the early racing racingGamble Gamble was through when the stretch was reached and there Blind Play looked all over a winner but Cherry Pie had closed on him and then Golden Spire moved around and closing with every stride he just failed to be up after Cherry Pie had put Blind Play away awayQuatrain Quatrain did just as he had done in his previous start when he threw his head in the air and wheeled as the barrier arose refusing to leave the post postThere There was a real thrill in the opening mile condition race when Frank Browns King Jimmy under a particularly vigorous ride by L Fator was just up in time to beat Continiud on sixteenth page HOLLIS FALLS TO VOLTAIC Continued from first page W Iw Coes Zukcr the one that cut out all the running Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Green Dragon was third and Win Ziegler Jrs Arabv fourth fourthZuker Zuker had a bit the best of the start and Mortensen at once rushed him into a good lead Green Dragon followed a couple of lengths after him and then came Phea ¬ sant well out from the others King Jimmy began well enough but he dropped back in the early running and was unable to hold his position positionThere There came little change in the running positions until the stretch was reached There King Jimmy began to move up but it seemed impossible that he could catch Zuker but Fator was hard at work and then the Coe fouryearold began to tire Right at the end Fator outrode little Mor ¬ tensen but it was not until the last stride that King Jimmy dropped his head down in front Araby met with some interference in the stretch or he might have shared in the purse division divisionRather Rather a good band of juveniles met in the four and a half furlongs dash run as the third race This was over the Widener Course and when the Rancocas Stables Cheops was winner in 51 he had made a new record for the distance This victory also completed a double for jockey Fator he having had the mount on King Jimmy in the opening race raceCheops Cheops began well and was never far from the lead going into command in the last quarter to hold the others safe Gun Royal showed much early speed but tired at the end while The Heathen just beat him for second place Whiskery did not appear to have any real excuse but Master William was crowded back after the rise of the barrier and never reached a contending position positionVagabond Vagabond King was another that was un ¬ fortunate at the start and he finished a bad last being eased up in the final quarter by Schuttinger One excellent reason for the fast time was that a wind was blowing down the course courseThe The steeplechase brought out rather an ordinary lot and fell to Cherki from the Somerset Stable while Joseph E Wideners Ascetic easily saved second place from 1 Dominicks Burton II following him came St Lawrence Smart Sinner Ready Wit and Lipingo in the order named Lipingo being beaten off offThe The only other starter was Harry Payne Whitneys Handsome the big chestnut son of Whisk Broom II and Hansa He was going well until he reached the sixth jump when he hit heavily and went down with Cheyne Before the start Handsome gave Cheyne a lively time in the saddle when lie all but ran off in long bounding bucks until he wore both himself and his rider out outThe The start was a good one and Bethel at once showed the way with Cherki and Smart Sinner attempting to go after him It was not long before Smart Sinner had enough and as he dropped back it was Ascetic that moved into second phice while Handsome was going well through the front field and not far back of the leaders Then he hit the fence that brouuht him down
