Sets Pace and Scores Easily Over Candidates for Preakness. % Star Fire Finishes Third, Leading Dark Secret and Curacao — Risque Is Unfortunate in First Start. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 10.— Pompeius, the greatly improved son of Pompey and Elvina, which races for W. R. Coe. followed up his hollow victory in the Excelsior Handicap of Saturday by galloping off with the mile and a sixteenth Southampton Handicap at Jamaica this afternoon. Never being asked to extend himself fully, he made all the pace and crossed the line in hand before James Butlers Star Fire. Following these two were a pair of candidates for the Preakness, the Wheatley Stables Dark Secret and the Greentree Stables Curacao. Thus it was that two not enjoying that rich engagement were masters. Curacao had raced third to Universe and Economic in the Wood, and after the running it was announced he would be reserved for the Maryland prize. On his showing in the Southampton his stock certainly did not advance any, but it became evident that it is well for all of the eligibles that Pompeius was not named. There really was not much to the running for Ensor, who had the mount on Pompeius, after breaking the son of Pompey in front, once took hold of his head and rated him along, merely showing the way. The colt could readily have opened up a gap on the others, but Ensor wisely rated him along under a steadying restraint. Swinging into the back stretch, Kurtsinger moved up on the outside with Curacao until he was at the heels of the winner, and he had made the move so smoothly that for an instant he threatened to go to the command. But that did not take into account the Ensor ride, and as the race was run the old rider had only to ease his hold slightly and Pompeius, with no visible effort, held his lead. Then, when Kurtsinger found that his mount was not closing on the Coe colt, he drew his whip. The son of Dominant felt its sting, and he seemed to sulk, and right there Star Fire was rushed up on the inside to race into second place. At this both Kel-» say, on Dark Secret, and Kurtsinger, on Curacao, called on their mounts, but they both had given up their best, and Siar Fire, showing becoming gameness, hung to sec-1 ond. In the stretch, with his mount still in hand, Ensor permitted Pompeius to draw away to his winning margin of six lengths. Star Fire had saved the place by a length, and Dark Secret beat Curacao a leith and a half for third. The race had a net value of ,925 to the winner. Parry made her first appearance of the year in the Artful Handicap. She was a handy winner over Risque, which was also appearing for the first time this season under silks. Third went to The Beasel, and French Lass and Lillie D., the only other starters, were soundly beaten. It is entirely possible there might have been a different result here with Risque the winner had she been handled with bet- ter judgment by Steffen. From a good start she was away in front, and it was The Beasel that ranged along side in the early racing. Risque was going along so well within herself that it appeared she could shake off The Beasel at the first asking, but for some unknown reason Steffen, instead, took back. In the meantime Kurtsinger rushed up on the outside with Parry, and Steffen was caught in a bad spot as The Beasel weakened under the challenge of the Greentree filly. He still had Risque under wraps three furlongs from the finish, and in the stretch took to the outside to make his run.
