POMPEIUS BY LENGTH Leads Home Cocked Hat and War Hero in Broadway Handicap. Jamison Easy Winner Over Martis and Condescend in Roseben Claiming Handicap. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 16. W. R. Coes Pompeius added the Broadway Handicap to his creditable score at Aqueduct tbday when he led home a nice band of three-year-olds over the mile and a sixteenth distance to earn ,125. Following him home came Cocked Hat, from the Woodland Farm Stable, and the lightweight of the party, while War Hero was third for Samuel D. Riddles Glen Riddle Farm. Well back of the son of Man o War came Barcelona Pete, War Plane and Pardee, in the order named. The Broadway Handicap was the big attraction of a thoroughly interesting day of racing that attracted a goodly crowd of regulars. The track was still sloppy from recent rains, but overhead conditions were all that could be desired. There was some delay at the post in the Broadway, for which War Hero was chiefly to blame. Then as the start came he stumbled rather badly, with the result that he was last out of his stall. Barcelona Pete left in motion, but Workman soon was showing the way with Pompeius and once the son of Pompey had taken command he was not to be headed. Barcelona Pete hung to him resolutely and the pair drew out a bit from the others as War Hero was bringing up the rear of the company. Cocked Hat, on which Hebert was saving ground, by sending him along the rail, was hanging to third place and at the head of the stretch, where Pompeius had Barcelona Pete beaten, he dashed up on the inside for an instant and threatened to catch the Coe colt. Pompeius was bearing out slightly in the run home, but Workman kept him at his task to have him safely over the line the Continued on twentieth page. In the meantime, War Hero was running over the others gallantly and, though beaten a length and a half for second place by Cocked Hat, he was a full four lengths before the tired Barcelona Pete. For this running blinkers were added to the equipment of War Hero, and it may have made a difference in his running, but his real handicap was in stumbling as he left his stall at the start. The Roseberi Claiming Handicap, over the mile route, went to one of the lightweights, when Charles H. Millers Jamison was rather an easy winner, with Dewey Benthams Martis just beating Frank E. Browns Condescend for second place. Flaming was a distant fourth, and the only other starter was Don Pedro. In a day of close finishes, there came another in the mile of the Gravesend, run as the fifth race. It brought victory to James Butlers Apprentice when he scored over War, from the Sagamore Stable, and C. V. Whitneys Fall Apple, making his first start of the year, was a close third. This race was marked by a deal of rough riding in which both Apprentice and Fall Apple were the chief sufferers, and War the chief offender.. Bolilee, which races for William Woodwards Belair Stable, was an easy winner over the maiden juveniles that met in the opening dash, at five furlongs. He led home Mrs. W. T. Andersons Saint Louis, and Sue Jones, racing for Alfred Vanderbilt, saved third in a close finish. It was the first time the Vanderbilt silks had been shown in racing. Cheap ones were invited to race six and a half furlongs in the last race of the day. It brought together a field of thirteen and the winner turned up in John C. Clarks Haggerson, with the Anall Stables Chicka-hominy racing into second place, while the Sage Stables Trajectory saved third from Claremont.
