LAT0NIA TURF NOTES It was off day at Latonia Tuesday morning. Only a few of the horses were called on to negotiate the slow going that prevailed after the rains of the week-end. There was but one stake candidate called on from a speed test and nothing in the way of a fast move was asked, of her. Play Lady, which James Baylor made an eligible for the Clipsetta Stakes, breezed five furlongs in 1:07. She went evenly all the way, stepping the quarter in :26 and the half mile in :54. T. F. Devereaux arrived from Lexington with the horses Uncle Matt, Axtel, Graceful Lad, Captain Karo and Nancy D., which races in the colors of Devereaux Brothers, and Last Stand, the property of P. J. ONeil. Axtel is a son of Axenstein and Pokebon-net; Graceful Lad is a son of Ladkin and Grace of Ogden and a half-brother to Master Ogden and Long Run. Captain Karo is a son of Captain Alcock and Karo. Axtel has fully recovered from the injury that threw him out of training at Churchill Downs. Tommy Oliphant, one of the best known western dockers, was an arrival from his home at Louisville and will remain until the close of the Latonia meeting. Mrs. John Weaver, the wife of the trainer of the W. E. Smith horses, was reported as slightly improved this morning. Mrs. Weaver has been very ill for several weeks. H. G. Smith has the two-year-olds Goodbye Blues and Hampton Court at Latonia. Both are sons of In Memoriam and were purchased from W. C. Goodloe. Quarters have been prepared for the seven horses Grover Hughes will bring from Lexington. The Hughes horses have been at the Kentucky Association course since last fall. Felix Scott, colored steeplechase rider died at a Covington hospital this morning. Scott was employed by H. Niehaus and his home was at Louisville, Ky. T. L. Pierce is expected from Bainbridge late today with ten of the Shandon Stable horses and three that will race in his colors.
