OHIO FAVORITES SCORE Essential Third Straight Choice to Win at Coney Island. Son of Sweep On, With Little South Riding, Goes in Best Form-Light Rain Falls. - CINCINNATI, Ohio, Aug. 8. An off-day program was offered at the Coney Island course of the Cincinnati Jockey Club this afternoon, five of the seven races being monopolized by those from the claiming ranks and the two exceptions being given over to maiden two-year-old fillies. A rain in this vicinity this morning did not fall heavily at the track and consequently the racing strip was good. Despite the overcast skies and unfavorable weather, a good crowd braved the elements. Formful racing was provided and several of the races resulted in close finishes. C. W. Moore furnished the third winning choice of the afternoon when Essential, a notorious bleeder, turned in one of his best efforts in scoring over Flying Silk, Miss Mary Lou and five others that contested the three-quarters third race. The son of Sweep On had the services of the diminutive George South and although Josephine D., Shift and Miss Mary Lou outran the winner to the stretch, South brought the Moore representative up fast, to head Miss Mary Lou before reaching the concluding furlong. At that stage Flying Silk had reached a prominent position and South, sensing the menace, had the victor under pressure as he passed the finish a length and a half before Flying Silk. The latter was a half-length before Miss Mary Lou, which was three lengths in the van of the fast closing Water Lad. After her early burst of speed, Josephine D. retired fast, but was much the best of Shift, Madelon and Jeff ONeil, which completed the field. A limit field of two-year-olds contested the six furlongs Terrace Park Claiming Purse, that served as the fourth, and it was productive of a popular victory and close finish when A. Deitrichs I Prevail got up to-win. Second went to Inspection, with Betty Wee, second choice to the victor, "third. Inspection was in motion at the start and she raced into a long lead in the opening three-eighths. I Prevail was heading Hard Boiled, but, after reaching the stretch, the winner gave way to the latter, but coming again, under L. While Inspection was six lengths before Betty Wee, the latter was forced to overcome early interference, which resulted from the straggling start. After nine unsuccessful efforts, O. R. Os-muns Wahmi lasted to score her initial victory when she beat Lily May, Lady Evelyn and four other maiden two-year-old fillies in the five and one-half furlongs introductory dash. Ridden by R. Martin, the daughter of Mirafel and Nairobi, the favorite, rushed into a long lead in the opening three-eighths and although Lily May threatened her midway of the stretch she continued gamely to be a neck the best. After making a bold bid in the opening quarter, Lady Evelyn, which raced greenly, dropped back. Long Bit scored the first success of the meeting for C. C. Van Meter when she out-gamed Nitten Nancy in the second. Ten maiden two-year-old fillies raced over the five and one-half furlongs, and the daughter of Ladkin was held at the prohibitive odds of nine to ten. After a long delay, the field went away in a straggling order, and Fawn Leap, second choice, was last in motion. After Noreda had shown the way to the first turn, W. Moran sent the winner into the lead, but after increasing her advantage in the run to the stretch, the filly stumbled but lasted to gain the nose decision.
