1 SARATOGA TURF NOTES $ ; e Jockey F. Smith arrived from Chicago and accepted his first mount. John McArdle, well known in New York-turf circles, died yesterday according to word received here. The Empire City statements were distributed among horsemen who participated in that meeting. Jockey H. Thurber arrived from Montreal and reported to trainer George Odom. George L. Arvin arrived with several horses that he raced during the eastern Canadian season. The change in track conditions brought about several scratches. Before the races, William Brennan brought out the Greentree Stables Spy Hill which had been scratched from the Saratoga Sales Stakes and permitted him o go three furlongs in :35and. This colt is a maiden son of the English sire Spion Kop and Marvella H., by Gainsborough, making his breeding on both sides of the house Unglish. He has only been raced twice, at Arlington Park, and he is of the type that should train on to real excellence. John Kane arrived from New York,, and stated that the prospects for the fall meetings at Aqueduct and Jamaica were promising. G. Ernest Hall is interesting horsemen in the fall stakes to be run at Laurel Park. Dick McNelly arrived from New York and stated that his horse Plaster Cast would be retained for fall racing. Despite the all-night rain, the track was much better than horsemen expected. The ground has been parched for at least six weeks and considerable rain wijl be necessary to turn the footing to heavy mud. Joe McLennan will arrive here Saturday with the stake blanks for the Chicago Derby and to make arrangement to ship horses West for the Hawthorne Gold Cup. Mrs. Mark Elias, wife of the veteran price-maker and clerk, died at the Monterey Hotel, New York, according to word received here today. Leo J. Bondy, secretary of the New York Giants, is here, a guest of Frank Stevens. Dave Marion, veteran theatrical man, arrived for a brief stay. Mr. and Mrs. H. Margolies and Miss Gertrude Bauch are at the Grand Union for the season. .
